All-time favourite is probably "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Miz. But here are others:
"Bring Him Home" from Les Miz
"Why God Why" from Miss Saigon
"Role of a Lifetime" from Bare
"Origin of Love" from Hedwig
"Endless Night" from The Lion King
"Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar
"Sunset Boulevard" from Sunset Boulevard
"Being Alive" from Company
"Losing My Mind" (I know this is supposed to be sung by a woman, but I think it's so much better when done by a guy)
"Music of the Night" from Phantom
"If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler

I'd say "Purpose" is a sad ballad in it's own way. along with:
Let me walk among you - batboy
If I didn't believe in you - tl5y
empty chairs and bring him home - les mis
she cries - sfanw
THE CIVIL WAR:
brother, my brother
tell my father
virginia
father how long?
last waltz for dixie
i'll never pass this way again
and the one that gets my vote for best is "Regimental Drummer"
"he ran off to find adventure
at the tender age of 9
like so many other sons
of old virginia
though he was too young to hold a rifle
he would bang his drum and smile
as a regimental drummer for a while.
with a heart as green as summer
and a laugh as rich as gold
he would polish up the old dreams so long forgotten
but somewhere on the road back home from Shiloh
he got older than his years
as the regimental drummer cried our tears.
and in his eyes i'd sometimes see
the boy that i used to be
for a moment i could leave this all behind
then all at once the boy was gone
lost on this road we're on
just another...fallen brother.
I still think of him each morning
and i pray for him each night
just a regimental drummer from ol virginia
and when i close my eyes I still remember
how he'd bang his drum and smile
so I march a little farther
when I hear the drummer's call
for the regimental drummer in us all.
the innocence in me has died
lost somewhere deep inside
like another...fallen brother
down the dusty roads behind me
to the ones still up ahead
there's a regimental drummer from ol Virginia
who will always fall in step beside me
and bang his drum and smile
so I march a little farther
when I hear the long roll start
for the regimental drummer in my heart."
talk about sad =(

DGrant,
Ijust finished a run of Fiddler (I played Motel) and that song known as the "Chava Ballet" Sequence was my favourite part of the play. It was so haunting and tragic. It gives m chills everytime I hear the music now. A great emotional character moment in the show.

"Blame it on My Youth" - really beautiful:
You were my adored one
Then you became the bored one
And I was like a toy that brought you joy one day
A Broken toy that you preferred to throw away...
If I expected love when first we kissed -
Blame it on my Youth
If just for you alone, I did exist -
Blame it on my Youth
I believed in everything, like a child of three
You meant more than anything -
All the world to me.
If you were on my mind all night and day -
Blame it on my Youth.
If I forgot to eat, and sleep, and pray -
Blame it on my Youth
If I cried a little bit, when first I learned the truth...
Don't blame it on my heart -
Blame it on my Youth.
