Wax Lion would like to remind everyone that Disney switched a lot of "On The Record" for the opposite sex. It was interesting, to say the least.

2. Great buckets of Spoffnor, they're going to sing!
3. "I love shrubs that are historical." -Johnny and The Sprites
4. "We're not singing it to you, we're singing it for us." -Rosario Dawson, about La Vie Boheme
5. "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours." -The History Boys
6. "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." -The History Boys

My opinion:
Singing a girl song is always a risk as a dude. But...sometimes it awakens the lyrics for an audience bored with the song. Who knows.

Wilbur.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:56amI liked it too. I didn't think I would, based on the originial idea, but you did an excellent job. That's the entire risk of switching genders for a song though isn't it. If you're not going to do something amazing, then it looks shabby, butyu did a very good job.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:20pmWelll, if a guy sings a girls song does he just sing it down an octive? That's the only reason I wouldn't wanna sing a girls song because most are written for a girl. Isn't it tough to change all the notes and stuff around? change the keys?

you have to be really careful when you pick songs to gender switch. My opinion is- if its something really well known, then stay away from it. For example, I dont think a guy singing "Dont Rain on My Parade" from Funny Girl for an audition is a good idea. I've seen it before, and it just doesnt. Even girls should shy away from that song at auditions, unless your better at it than Barbara Stresiand (and there are few who can do it). BUT! If no one has ever heard of the song, then go right ahead! Speaking French would work, but remeber that there are some INCREDIBLE songs out there written for guys that work even better, like stuff from The Boy From Oz (the Boy Next Door, Bi-Costal, Everything Old is New Again), Crazy For You (Shall We Dance, Slap That Bass), Follies (Buddy's Blues), and if your looking for sexual stuff, look into Cabaret, Chicago, and other Kander and Ebb material.
Still, if done right, Speaking French could work. That would be really interesting. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!! But dont give up on all of that great male musical theater material.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 2:22pmI thought that that sounded good! The audience was sooooo into it (alot of that had to do, it seems, with the acrobatics) why didn't you go more "all out" I think you could have gayed that number up a bit more, but good work.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 2:33pmI don't really have an opinion about singing the opposite sex's songs... but you did a really nice job! I was impressed with your voice... and I'm usually a huge jerk when it comes to hearing people sing. lol

Posted: 7/5/05 at 2:33pmI did a show a cabaret show a while back where the entire concept was men singing Broadway songs originally written for women. It was hugely successful and audiences seemed to love it. We had a good mix of fun/campy songs and nice ballads. It's a fine line because sometimes a man singing a song written for a woman can be unintentionally funny when not done the right way. We put a lot of thought into what songs would work and which ones to steer clear of because there was just no way to put them across without an audience laughing when we didn't want them to. By the way, we DID use a snippet of "Don't Rain On My Parade" in a medley, but it was played strictly for laughs.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 3:49pmI sing the female solo to Til We Reach That Day all the time, but none of my friends know ragtime so they don't know it is sun by a woman... That's the only one I can think of right now, but I am sure I do it with plenty of songs...

Posted: 7/5/05 at 3:53pmI've done "What I Did For Love" and "As Long as He Needs Me" for auditions and gotten the part both times. I was also just working on "A Change In Me" in my voice class.

Wow... but for most people don't accept it when guys sing girls songs, but then they accept it when girls sing guys songs? I don't understand

Posted: 7/5/05 at 4:50pmI've enver sung a girl's song for people, but as a guy i feel there needs to be better music written for guys who can belt. i eman most musicals for guys suck. I can belt so the only shows that really fit my voice are ithngs like jekyll and hyde and rent. i wish there are good belt songs for guys out there

Posted: 7/5/05 at 5:10pmI really wanna try my hand at singing Raul's version of Defying Gravity, just for my voice class, I don't think i'd use it for an audition ever. I really want to sing "here i am" from DRS too. Yazbek sings it and it sounds pretty good to me.
