Guys singing a girl's song (I added a video clip)
re: Guys singing a girl's song#1
Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:02pmNot being mean, but a guy singing my strongest suit is just wierd. But I'm sure you did a great job! I don't know the other song but I'm glad you chose a great song to sing for the concert.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:03pmThere are multiple threads on this topic...I can't seem to recall the titles of them at the moment. I'm sure someone will be here in a moment.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:05pmThe only girl song I would be interested in singing is "Where Am I Going?" from Charity. Take away the plot of the show, and the lyrics could be either for a male or female.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:07pmYup quite a few threads on this I think the basic conclusion that can be drawn from them is, Its completely your choice, but be prepared to face criticism at times because for everyone who thought it was okay there was someone who thought it was a bad idea...

Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:45pmI'm listening to Raul Esparza sing "Defying Gravity" right now, so I'm going to give the thumbs up on guys singing a girl's song.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 9:49pmI've been contemplating doing "Goodbye Until Tomorrow" from The Last Five Years at a concert. I really don't think it matters what gender you are.

Posted: 6/29/05 at 11:31pmOur dear friend Albin is fond of singing "I Enjoy Being A Girl" whenever he's had one too many cosmopolitans. No one seems to mind. Maybe that's because no one pays any attention to him.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:00amMy favorite version of Defying Gravity is indeed sung by a man. Raúl Esparza, you own my heart.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:09amOMG at the Maryland High School Theaterfest this girl and guy sang "For Good" from Wicked. it was so weird especially because they changed the name to Wilbur instead of Glinda. You expect one thing and get another. They both sang well and everything but it was just...weird.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:10amWilbur? Of all names in the world, Wilbur? That's amazing.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:25amI sang girl songs for audutions, I sand "send in the Clouds" and then I sang..."Gus the Theatre cat", I find that girl songs are SO much easier range wise to sing.
re: Guys singing a girl's song#21
Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:30amUm, do you mean "Send in the CLOWNS?"

I used to think it was "Send in the Clouds!" Granted, that was over five years ago, but...YAY!!! I'm not alone!!!
Anyhow...Shneb, I say go for it. If the song is not inherently gender specific (if it is, do it in drag!) and you can sing the song well, go ahead and SING IT BOY!

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:50amFor a situation like yours it was fine to do. Seemed like a crowd pleaser. I would work on the beginning (Maybe work on the transposing or something to make it sit in a more comfortable part of your range). It started off weak (due to the low range of the song, NOT vocal quality), but definitley built to a climax. Great job.

Wax Lion would like to remind everyone that Disney switched a lot of "On The Record" for the opposite sex. It was interesting, to say the least.

2. Great buckets of Spoffnor, they're going to sing!
3. "I love shrubs that are historical." -Johnny and The Sprites
4. "We're not singing it to you, we're singing it for us." -Rosario Dawson, about La Vie Boheme
5. "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours." -The History Boys
6. "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." -The History Boys

My opinion:
Singing a girl song is always a risk as a dude. But...sometimes it awakens the lyrics for an audience bored with the song. Who knows.
