Uhm. Yeah, I'm watching SNL righ tnow, and Gwen Stefani is on singing a song with Eve. Well, it is DEFiNATELY a piece of Fiddler's 'If I Were a Rich Man'. The chrous goes something like 'If I were a wealthy gitl! Nanananan (Sort of like the biddy-bums), I'd have all the money in the world...' Uhm. PLEASE, why on earth would she do that? It's frightening.

Yeah, i just saw it too. It was okay. I didnt really care for the song, but it's good that Broadway is going somewhat mainstream. I mean Jay-Z - the rapper - did a song a while back that sampled "hard knock life" from Annie.

Probably "Rich Girl."
I hate how the chorus goes, "If I WAS a rich girl..."
It's "were," not was. That's one of my biggest pet peeves. At least use correct grammar.

Oh it goes waaay past bad grammar for me. I think that that's my least favorite song of all time. Not only did they mangle a show tune, they used it to promote both of their own, equally ugly fashion lines. "See Stefani in the L.A.M.B., I rock the Fetish people you know who I am"....ugh it makes me want to vomit. The lyrics are pedestrian, and the music behind it is just annoying. I actually feel myself getting angry when it comes on. It's like those whistles that make dogs go nuts.

its not a ripoff so much as a homage...
And I know people are sick of having pop stars in shows but I think Gwen could ACTUALLY handle it. Shes got a voice, personality and TONS of stage presence.

I like Gwen, but I do not like how she re-did that song. Uh-uh. The original version was a really good song but firstly, it makes a lot more sense in the story of "Fiddler on the Roof", and I also just like the music better in the original version.

Kangaroo, the song is "If I WERE a rich man," not "If I WAS a rich man."
Why on earth would Gwen change her song to be incorrect? It just pisses me off (sorry, I don't mean to sound so angry, and I'm not jumping at you Kangaroo, I'm just trying to prove my point).

At first I liked it, yes.
"Ooh! Look, Gwen's singing a song from Fiddler, very cool!"
But then when it became incredibly overplayed, I was a little annoyed.
But when I was driving a girl home from school, and had my Fiddler soundtrack in, and she says, "Hey! What IS this? They TOTALLY ripped off Gwen Stefani!!!"
I almost cried.

My local radio station has an all-request lunch hour from 12-1 in the afternoon. I called them up (and they recorded me and played it) and said "I'd like to request that you not play Gwen Stefani and Eve's "Rich Girl" for at least one hour out of my already stressful workday. That song is an affront to musical theatre as well as anyone with taste. And it's annoying". And they actually didn't play it for that hour. But at 1:06, there it was.

Um, why is this just coming up now in late March? I know Gwen was just on SNL last night -- but how outta the loop are you? The album was out before Thanksgiving... And the sample was written about & discussed plenty beforehand...

What's the problem? The credit is clearly given to the original writers -- if anything it might open some ears up to the original material... and if not, so what? How does it hurt to know the hook of a Broadway musical has been borrowed for the hook of a pop song?

Shirley, it's fine if they do justice to the song. But if it sucks THAT bad, it deserves any negative comments. And you just answered your own question on why it's being brought up now: it was on SNL last night.
