So, I got the tickets at TKTS that night. They were in Mezzanine, but as long as I saw Patti, I was fine. I made sure that they weren't partially obstructed. My heart literally stopped beating when they said that Ms. LuPone has injured her foot, but then I realized that it was a joke. I saw the best orchestra and probably the best overture on Broadway right now. All of the performers were great, but I especially liked Patti LuPone (duh), Boyd Gaines, Laura Benanti, and Leigh Ann Larkin. Oh, and the little girl who plays Baby June, she is fantastic! A great dancer! Probably the most talented child actor on Broadway right now! This was definitely the best production of "Gypsy" ever, although no one can compare to Ethel Merman, overall I think that this production as a whole, was better. I was not too impressed with the set, but the amazing acting made up for it. If you want to see the 3 most talented performers on Broadway right now, they're all at the St. James in "Gypsy". Seriously, it's that good! Overall, a great production (an amazing ending to act 1, I was stunned), and a grand finale with a very powerful "Rose's Turn". Only thing that bothered me, was that the lady next to me (she was an older lady, said that she has seen "Gypsy" over 10 times, and that this was her fourth time at this production), sang the songs as the actors sang them. During intermission, someone asked her if she could please stop singing and humming. She said that she didn't realize that she was doing it, but that she would stop if it bothered anyone. So, during act 2, she got into a new thing. Saying the lines as the actors said them (usually Rose's but occasionally, she did Louise's and Herbie's). The girl was bothered by this and gave her a look, and she stopped, but she couldn't help it during "Rose's Turn", so she did it anyway.
Overall, I'd give it 6 out of 5 stars.

although no one can compare to (insert original cast member here)
Oh, how I loathe people who uses that sentence.
But anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I can't wait to see it later this week!

"My heart literally stopped beating when they said that Ms. LuPone has injured her foot, but then I realized that it was a joke."
Shows now open with a joke?

Posted: 6/24/08 at 9:12amYou're how old? How old were you when you saw Angela Lansbury play it? Or Tyne Daly? Or Ethel Merman, for that matter? Since you say no one can compare to her, I'm assuming you saw her do it, right?

Posted: 6/24/08 at 9:43amShe saw them in VOB fileshares from her livejournal communities, I'm sure. She wouldn't try and compare a performance via a cast recording. Now would she?

MTF3, welcome to the concept of "damned if you do, damned if you don't."
You tried to put in the qualifier "although no one can compare to Merman," hoping to keep the rabid hounds off your back. But no! It's a two-sided trap. You're not old enough to have seen Merman!
But wait, you say. I thought I had to say something like that. Otherwise someone would say "How can you say you liked Patti? Don't you realize that Merman was the greatest Rose?"
Sadly, there's no way out.
I enjoyed your review, and I'm glad you enjoyed the show!
