Gypsy Tonight

Gypsy is such a great show. Doesn't sound like it is going to last long. Bernadette is what is keeping it alive.

When I saw Gypsy it was with great understudies for Louise and June, which only made me enjoy it the more. It's a brilliant musical and its leading lady manages to be compelling in a trying role, and I'm surprised no one's been singling out John Dosset for his great performance as Herbie...but I couldn't shake the feeling of something being off. It's like all the set and scenery was designed with the singular thought, "You want a set? Fine, have a set." And I'm amazed that an acclaimed musical like Gypsy has so big a hole in its dramatic interest as "Little Lamb," which fails utterly at giving Louise anything like a crucial bit of characterization.

I can't bear listening to Hairspray's songs (bubblegum pop, which Hairspray's score is unapologetically, is pretty much unlistenable for me), so I can neither evaluate that show from the cast album or actually seeing it live. But Peters seemed to be turning in a worthy performance in acting. Not as sure about her vocals.

emmamia, where do you get your information that GYPSY is not selling?

It is selling quite well according to the box office reports published by playbill and variety and listed here at broadwayworld.com.

Additonally,

there was an article on the "crawl" here yesterday or the day before saying that

John Dosset renewed his contract with GYPSY through SEPTEMBER rather than join the cast of Assassins.

Again, where did you get your information that GYPSY is not selling?

Don't worry, people, as long as most people go to theater to see that which they've already seen, know and trust and that which is completely without modern sensibilities or interests, a revival of 'Gypsy' will always have a home on Broadway.

And if you can't see it on Broadway it's equally vibrant in dinner theaters and community theater all across the Great White Plains.

emmamia, I hope that if Bernadette leaves after one year they consider someone with at least perceived box office influence, perhaps:

Kathy Bates
Cyndi Lauper
Shirley MacLaine

I would love to see Patti Lupone or Michelle Lee or obviously Liza if she were well. I am not sure who would deliver the ticket sales however.

I agree with moljul. I think Megan is an excellent choice. But people would have to remember that when they go they wouldn't be seeing Karen Walker. When one person is identified by the character they play on television it can be very difficult for the boob-tube addicts to get past that.
I think Cyndi would be adorable in the role, but I don't think she can act the part. Though she and Bernadette have something in common: both born and raised in Ozone Park Queens, and only 5 or 6 years apart. I wonder if they ever crossed paths as children? Plus they both look great for their age.

I don't see Gypsy closing anytime soon. I just hope they don't start bringing in big name-no talent stars after Bernie leaves.

Why are all the Roxie's in there 40's? I thought Roxie was supposed to be young and Velma is the old one.
