I am an absolute humongous fan of Bernadette! Her GYPSY was amazing. She was truly fabulous, and no one has been better in the role. She really brought something forward that no one else can do. She has such amazing talent and her acting and singing brought together MADE the show. I didn't think Tammy was too great. I thought her voice was weak and that she didn't bring and amazing transition form Louise to Gypsy. John was amazing. I really think that Bernadette brought the whole show together, and if it wasn't for her, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did (although it wasn't a long run).
PS- can u tell how much of a HUGE FANATIC i am of Bernadette?!

I thought that Tammy was wonderful. Her voice isnt the best I've ever heard, but it wasnt painful. I thought her acting made up for her singing. I would love to see her in a straight play.

This is slightly off the subject, but I would have loved to have seen Cathy Trien go on as Mama Rose. To the best of my knowledge, that never happened. God the set of lungs on that woman though. Her voice could blow you through the back of the theatre.

Tammy had the right charisma for Louise. I just didn't see where she got it. That was the only problem I had with the show.

Poor Cathy... all she did was strip in the background.

I would like to have seen Bette (Midler, not Davis--Sorry for the scare Margo) in the role on Broadway. Again, I am a huge Bernadette fan, and yes, she brought a wonderful depth and characterization to the role. But the role is about gusto and balls and....well, we used to call it moxie. And THAT is the Divine one.

Hey, but what about Bette Davis singing Rose's Turn????

I had the pleasure of hearing Cathy during an understudy rehearsal and I was blown away. She would have been a kick ass Mama Rose! re: Gypsy revival CD

If I could see Bette Midler perform Rose onstage, I would lay down afterwards and die a very happy man.

People have dismissed her TV mama R, but I think Bette M is too big for TV.

Who saw Betty Bucley's Rose at Papermill playhouse a few years back -- now THAT was a conniving and scheming Rose --

Yeah--but not enough gusto and physicality. But hey, KMF, how about Patti?

After watching the film Stella Dallas on TMC last night, I was thinking that Barbara Stanwyck would have made an interesting Rose.

And then there's all of us dreamers who wonder what Judy Garland could have done with the role of Rose.

I am actually suprised the recording is as good as it is --I saw the performance the day before tehy went into the studio and BP was not in great voice that night -- maybe they pushed her stuff back to later in the session, but my friend and I talked a lot about how the recording might suffer as we walked back to my apartment...

I think any older female performer would be great as Rose. Its one of those roles that is amazing no matter who plays her.

I respectfully disagree. Gypsy is a hard musical to ruin, true- with a score and book like that, no wonder. But playing Rose is not something any actress can do. The singing alone is unbelievably strenuous- I think Merman herself was the only one who didn't eventually tire out from playing that role. And the acting load isn't exactly small, either. Rose is a powerful character who holds together the whole show, including the sometimes difficult transition from the June focus of Act I to the Louise focus of Act II. And then she has to do "Rose's Turn." Not every actress can pull that off.

I've heard Cathy Trien's voice on the Gypsy selection, "Sing Out, Jesus", on the BCEFA Christmas CD. I agree, her voice is amazing and she would have made an amazing Rose, vocally. She might still be a little too young to carry off much of the 2nd act and I've never seen her act beyond her scenes in Gypsy. But that woman does have a voice on her. I'm sure she will find much success in the future.

I actually think she really could physically carry off the role... it's an absolute shame she never got to go on.

And yes, she's AMAZING in Sing Out, Jesus. In fact, the first time I heard this song was Sunday night; a friend sent it to me since this is the only Carols for a Cure cd I dont have yet and I was babbling on about another friend who sang on that track... I haven't been able to shut it off since.

I have to disagree with you BWB88. The role as written is complex and fascinating, but the actor playing her needs to be able to communicate all that complexity and then sing some very powerful, very difficult songs. The fact that an actress as talented, accomplished and multi-faceted as Bernadette turned in a performance that is open to debate as to its success indicates, I think, how tough a role this is.

BTW -- moljul, can you do me a huge favor and tell me who all is singing on the Gypsy track? I can pick out several voices I recognize, but I'm curious about who the rest are. re: Gypsy revival CD

Well I'm doing this off the top of my head but I noticed a lot of the understudies and chorus members were in the star roles which was a nice opportunity for them to get the spotlight and I think also firmly conveyed how talented the supporting cast of that production was. Bill Parry played Joseph to Cathy Trien's Mary. The three women (not going to list all names) who played the 3 strippers in Gypsy were the wives of the three kings (their better, better halves). Molly ? who played the balloon girl and understudied Baby Louise was The Little Lamb - kind of the main character of the song. One of the young boys played a speaking role of one of the other animals in the stable. Some of the older boys and Bill Parry played the Shepherds. Addison Timlin (Baby Louise) and Heather Tepe (Baby June) played the other animals in the stable - no solos. The Hollywood Blondes played the angels. I think that is about it.

Bernadette Peters, John Dossett, Tammy Blanchard, and Kate Reinders were not on the CD. I think they would have been great to hear, but like I said, it was nice for the chorus to have their chance to shine.
