I am listening to this CD right now (the current revival with Bernadette) and I am remember how great this show was! The music is amazing beyond belief and Bernadette, Tammy, and John were perfection! This shouldve won the Best Revival Tony! Just AMAZING!!!!!
Yes I have to agree with you on that one. I think when I was watching the Tony's last year and they announced Nine for best revival. I had this "what the @#$%!!!" look on my face. I hadn't seen Nine but my aunt had and she even says Gypsy should have won.

Bernadette and Tammy both sounded much better at the Shubert. Some of Bernadette's songs sound like they were recorded in a tunnel. But other than that, the recording is excellent in my opinion. The overture on that CD is my favorite of the 4 Broadway recordings of the show.
When I listen to that CD, such great memories come back to me about when I saw the show and met Bernadette afterwards backstage. ::sigh::
I knew NINE would win. It was just too boring for me. Gypsy was a truly history-making revival. It was mind blowing. Updated On: 8/2/04 at 10:49 PM

I actually saw NINE and GYPSY the same day. NINE deserved the Tony although I loved what Sam Mendes did with GYPSY.

The score to "Nine" comes off as wooden and boring to me. The only song I ever listen to on the recording is "A Call from Vatican."

lucky you... you got to meet bernadette. i've been trying to meet her for a few years now and no luck.
I loved this "Gypsy," too. I was lucky enough to see it from the front row and Bernadette Peters BECAME Mama Rose. Her facial expressions and line delivery was excellent. "Rose's Turn" was absolutely amazing, breaththaking, and thrilling. An excellent show all around.
I loved "Nine," too. "Gypsy" has the slight edge.
In all honesty, I thought Gypsy was perhaps the Best Revival of a musical I have ever seen. Though the last revival of The King and I isnt close behind. Donna Murphy was amazing and Lou Diamond Phillips was shockingly wonderful. Two AMAZING, STAND OUT, KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF revivals!!

That CD does NOT show off how great that was in person!!!:0
Bernadettes rendition of Roses Turn was the musical highlight of the year. I got goosebumps all over and each time I saw it, she got a standing ovation for it when she finished singing it. She is a true talent. What a voice and what acting skills to match! There will NEVER be another Bernadette Peters!!!
I also was able to see Gypsy from a front row center orchestra seat and do not think I will ever have an experience like it again. It was amazing...and I also agree that it should have won for best revival...along with best actress in a musical (but I am not going to start that arguement again!)
I love Bernadette. I did not love her as Rose. At all. The Tonys were appropriately awarded last year.
I am of your opinion Matt G.

I enjoyed the Gyspsy revival. My favorite part was the strippers. I though Bernadette was very good as were Tammy and John. I'm still on the fence of who should have won Best Actress. Bernadette and Marissa were both very good. Nine definitly deserved to win revival.

Tammy was great and I loved the big hat. You go Sam!
I saw Tyne many years ago live, but I still love my Angela recording.

For me, Bernadette on the recording is just a bit too shrill. It sounds like she is really struggling and yes, maybe that is the point, but it is hard to simply listen to. As one of my friends put it... "nails on chalkboard."
Glebb--thanks for reminding me; I haven't listened to Angela in more than a year. Tyne is my fave--not the singer Bernadette is, but a superior (to me) Mama Rose.
Bernadette brought a new light to the character of Rose. She took on the role from a whole other point of view. She was unique and amazing. I still think Marrissa deserved the Tony though, I must say. She was excellent.

This is the only version of GYPSY where I can listen to "All I Need Is the Girl". I DO have a certain fondness for David Burtka... though he DOES have that rather pronounced lisp.....

Ms. Peters definitely sounded better in the theater than on that recording, but the CD is a nice tool to evoke my memories of watching the revival.
And I wish she's won the Tony over Winokur, who gave a good performance in a much lighter part.
Does anyone know what Brooks Ashmanskas (Mr. Goldstone) is up to now?
