Just got back from our 14th visit. Arrived at the theater to find out that Anika Noni Rose was out. Our initial disappointment was quickly ended by the performance of Shannon Antalan, who was fabulous as Emmie !!! An amazing, powerhouse voice. She plays the role with more anger than Anika does. Not quite the angelic sounding quality to her voice, but her "I Hate the Bus" rocked !!!
Once we got inside, Playbill insert read that Veanne Cox was also out (not listed in the lobby)
Sue Goodman played the role of Rose Stopnick Gellman. Excellent voice, but not as funny as Veanne Cox. Guess that is to be expected when you hardly get to perform. We did not find Veanne to be that funny the first time that we show the show, but she just got better and better. Ms. Goodman was much better (and received many more laughs) in the second act.
Ms. Pinkins... what can you say?? Even at the end of the week, she was amazing !! Her "Lots Wife", for the 1st time that we have ever heard, received applause after her last "Flat".... when the song is not even finished !! She is just incredible.
Now for the GREAT news... Hung out by the stage door for a bit. Bought the book (Libretto) inside the theater , and the cast was very gracious in signing. Met one of the shows producers by the stage door, and spoke with her for a while, as well as a family member of one of the leads, who recognized me (and was an absolute sweetheart!) Was told by both that HBO HAS recorded the show, and its just a matter now of airing it (and possibly releasing it on DVD). Really hope this happens, but at least it has definitey been recorded !!!
