As you all know, tomorrow is the 40th anniversay of TWHM. To celebrate, you are all asked to wear red (the official color of the Harmonia Gardens). You don't have to be a great fan of the show, but you ARE a great fan of musical comedy...therefore no one is exempt from participating!!!!
HAPPY DOLLY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dollypop, I'm very sorry I won't be there. I will wear red here in Austin.

Dollypop,
I'm curious about the significance of your Bibi Osterwald tagline. I know she understudied the role of Dolly (perhaps Standby is the correct term). Did you get to see her do the role? I wish I would have, I bet she was great.
Another fan of Dolly, here. It was the first B'way musical I saw. And by the time the train was heading back to NYC from Yonkers, I was hooked.
Thanks, too, for the great article about Carol Channing and Dolly. I loved the story about the Kennedy's visiting the St. James theatre. I got a chance to go backstage at the St. James before Dolly closed, and when Carol talked about them taking down the train from 3 stories up... I could just picture it, since I, too, looked around the stage to see where they stored the train.
What's the scoop on a revival of DOLLY?
Or is this a project for the next generation?

Here's the rumor that's floating around, and originates from Craig Zadan's office:
There are negotiations underway for Bette Midler to do a limited run in TWHM on Broadway in 2006. Bette will then do the show as a TV movie.
Dolly, what does TGCC think of that bit of casting?
I think it could be pretty fab, myself. She has the humour and the warmth to pull it off.

I'm less concerned with who is playing Dolly than I am with who's directing it. I've seen many productions of the show that have fallen flat because of poor direction and bizarre concepts (like the "Sunday Clothes" number being done all in white!)
Gower Champion's concept was so letter-perfect that I question what do to the show.

To Ragtime Ray:
Yes, I did see Bibi go on on TWHM. Oddly enough it was vary early in the Pearl Bailey company. Bibi was the only white performer on the stage. She was marvelous, but she left the company shortly afterwards (Thelma Carpenter became the standby and played the matinees). Bibi re-joined the show when Phyllis Diller took over, and she stayed throughout the Merman run.
I had the food fortunes to meet Bibi about 20 years ago at Ma Bell's restaruant. She and Estelle Parsons were having after-show cocktails. Both ladies were delightful.
