Im auditioning for Newsies this weekend at a regional theater, and I have no clue what to use for an audition song. Im going for Katherine, so I want to use an upbeat, driving song. Unfortunately, my overall Broadway knowledge is limited as of late. Any suggestions?? Im desperate

Good Luck and want it...own it!

An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourcesful, she boldy captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. While she generally has no time for cocky, streetwise young men, she makes an exception for Jack Kelly. Though she only has a brief dance solo in “King of New York,” Katherine should have a great contemporary pop voice with a high belt – diction is key.

Well, I wouldn't try to learn anything new for an audition this weekend.  Look at what you have already prepared and pick the strongest character you have.  (You can't build enough confidence in a song you barely know!)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I cannot agree more!! You should really pick from your current repertoire and see what the most upbeat, driving song is. If the casting notice doesn't specifically say it has to be a musical theatre song, think about doing a non-MT song. Just make sure you connect to the words, your voice will do the rest.

If you're trying for one of the newsboys try "Without Me"  from the Happy Time.

Another song is "Freedom"  from Shennandoah.

A great upbeat audition song that also shows off your voice is "Notice Me Horton" from Suessical the Musical. Hope I could help!

Similar time period (I think there's roughly a 20 year difference in setting) and also capitalizes on diction:

Either "Wherever He Ain't" or "Look What Happened to Mabel" from Mack and Mabel
