For the first time ever, I'll be visiting the city of Chicago for URTAs. I'll be interviewing one day and then I am staying a second day to catch a show on Feb 1.
I'd love to hear some suggestions of theaters and shows to check out that will be playing on that day. (There's also a chance I could catch something on the night of the 30th).
Thanks in advance!
Well, Wicked will be gone, but Jersey Boys will be at the Bank of America Theater and Xanadu will be at the Drury Lane. Spamalot's last day here is Feb. 1 at the Auditorium Theater. Desire Under The Elms will be playing at the Goodman. The Seafarer will be going on at Steppenwolf. Other than that I'm not totally sure what will be here, I'm sure whatever is at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater or the Lyric Opera House is awesome as usual. Second City is also ALWAYS worth checking out, and sometimes alums will stop by to do improv after the show (last I was there someone who now writes for South Park came).
If you could extend your day by two days, you could see Rob Roy the Musical at the Arie Crown Theatre. It is supposed to be pre-broadway, with a stop in Toronto after Chicago.
Check out chicagoplays.com, you can select a date and see pretty much everything that will be playing in Chicago on that day. My suggestion is to see whatever is playing at Steppenwolf though. If you're in Chicago, ya gotta! You can get a rush ticket the day of any performance at the box office for $20.
whatever you do, don't go see anything at the Auditorium theatre...dreadful place!
What's wrong with the Auditorium Theatre?
The sightlines, the acoustics and the design elements are fantastic! Aren't they???
The Auditorium Theatre is way too big to house any Broadway musical. Sitting in the balcony is like watching the show from a mile away.

The Auditorium is much more than just a theater. Built by Louis Sullivan and dedicated by Grover Cleveland, host to the 1888 Republican Convention, first job for Frank Lloyd Wright, first home for the Chicago Symphony and said to be acoustically perfect, star of the 1893 World's Fair, First home for the Civic opera, host for the first radio broadcast of a complete Opera...and of course, the Theater which sacrificed it's lobby to be a sidewalk....
Apart from that, it's gorgeous.
Well, not the lobby exactly.............
Steppenwolf does amazing work. Birthplace of August: Osage County. At the time as someone said they are doing the seafarer. Id suggest that because very rarely do they do bad work.
Just saw earlier that they are doing THE SEAFARER. I missed it in NY too. I'll have to be sure to see it.
Rarely does bad work? -- You must not have seen their CRUCIBLE, BETRAYAL, or GOOD BOYS AND TRUE...
Jersey Boys. Have a great time! I refer to Chicago as "mini New York."
I'll be seeing The Joffrey's Nutcracker at Christmas. Have a great aisle seat, 12 rows Center Orchestra.
