A friend of mine wants me to go with him to see a Musical in Mufti? show, but I have no idea what it is, which show we should see (as of now, we're looking at Mirette & Life after H.S) or if its worth going at all. Limited on $, so would rather not spend money if its not necessary. any help would be appreciated.

It's a staged reading of shows little known (or seldom performed) in street clothes. They vary from outstanding (Wierd Romance, Darling of the Day,Lucky Stiff) to under-reahearsed or under cast (Jamaica, New Girl in Town, Fanny).
Understandable, as they are rehearsed very quickly,-it depends on how much preparation the performer make before the rehearsal period.
Worth the time.

Posted: 10/24/05 at 10:40ami don't think they have announced the cast yet. the only thing i know about the show is that it was a huge flop on broadway. Since I am a flopaholic, this is a must see for me! I also just ordered the cast recording on amazon.com, but I think it is on backorder so I probably won't get it until after I see the show. Let me know if you end up going that same day. We can meet up during intermission and say hi.

Posted: 10/24/05 at 11:18amI saw a show there last year (the one based on the same story as Side Show... i believe it was called 20 Fingers, 20 Toes). I think it's an amazing program, and I couldn't be happier they're doing Is There Life After High School?!! I absolutely LOVE the show, and I LOVE Craig Carnelia! I can't believe he's directing!

The characters are just Woman 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as Man 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. They play individual characters throughout the show, but it switches.
Alma Cuervo, one of the original stars, was eventually in Beauty and The Beast on Broadway as Mrs. Potts and she was also in Titanic. Maureen Sillman later recorded a CD with Craig Carnelia of his hit cabaret act, Pictures in the Hall. Sandy Faison was Grace in the OBC of Annie. David Patrick Kelly was also in Working (where he sang Carnelia's song, The Mason)... this was pre- High School though. Harry Groener was in Crazy For You and Cats, as well as being on tons of compilation recordings, like Broadway Bound, Unsung Musicals, Unsung Sondheim, A Broadway Christmas, etc. Philip Hoffman was in the OBCs of Baby (also a Barrymore Theater flop), Into the Woods, Falsettos, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and the revival of Fiddler.
I am obsessed with the show and the OBC. *sheepish smile* I love The Kid Inside, Diary of a Homecoming Queen, and Fran and Janie makes me cry! I also love some of the monologues. I've seen two college productions of the show, but I cannot wait for this one. I cannot waiiiiiit.

thanks, mef! that's what i thought, but i'm getting anxious to know!
francisgumm- mufti means they are like staged concerts, not altogether a production OR a concert, but somewhere in between. either way, they're usually excellent!

TAKE ME ALONG
A Musical in Two Acts, 13 Scenes. Book by Joseph Stein and Robert Russell. Based on the play "Ah, Wilderness!" by Eugene O'Neill. Music and lyrics by Bob Merrill. Produced by David Merrick. Opened 22 October 1959 at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre and closed 17 December 1960 after 448 performances.
Take Me Along, a musical comedy which will be directed by Michael Montel, takes place in Centerville, Connecticut, in 1906 and its story begins with a triumph in journalism. Nat Miller, publisher of the Centerville Globe, has won a new fire engine for the town and its citizens celebrate its purchase by cheering him. Somewhat overcome by the honor, Nat wonders if he is truly as great as the people claim. His wife Essie, his sister Lily and the rest of his family insist, over his objections that he is. But his pride is tarnished when one of his advertisers condemns him because of the seductive and romantic poetry that his son has been reading to the advertiser's daughter. Amidst all this is the story of the ne'er-do-well brother-in-law who never met a boss nor a booze he could tolerate.

Carmelina, the central character, is an attractive, highly respected lady, the mother of a lovely 17 year old daughter, Gia. The villagers know her as the widow of an American soldier, who had heroically died in battle, and whose family continues to support her and her daughter. But Carmelina harbours a painful secret.
PLAIN AND FANCY
Music by Albert Hague: Lyrics by Arnold B. Horwitt: Book by Joseph Stein & Will Glickman.
Opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, - Jan. 27, 1955 (461 perfs)
Dan King and his girl, Ruth Winters, are sophisticated New Yorkers lost in the heart of Amish Pennsylvania to settle a piece of property owned by Dan’s family. Dan has inherited land and has agreed to sell it to Papa Yoder for a wedding gift to his daughter, Katie, and her intended, Ezra. While there, they become involved with the local villagers. Hilda Miller, a spunky Amish maiden, falls for Dan and misinterprets his kind words as words of love. The Amish men tease Ezra about marrying Katie. Ezra's brother Peter, banished from the community for fighting, has returned. He and Katie were childhood sweethearts, and the feelings are very much alive. Dan tries to intercede for the lovers, but stubborn Papa Yoder reminds him that he is a guest in a different way of life. Their adventurous encounters bring Dan and Ruth closer together as they return to New York.
