All good examples, Patash, but countered with Julia Roberts in Three Days of Rain, Danny Glover in Master Harold, Edie Falco in Night Mother and Frankie and Johnny, Sean Combs in Raisin In The Sun, Jessica Lange in a few Williams revivals, Tom Selleck in A Thousand Clowns, Scarlett Johansson in A View from the Bridge, Peter Krause in After the Fall, Katie Holmes in All My Sons, Cedric the Entertainer (and Haley Osment) in American Buffalo, Natasha Richardson in several revivals, Abigail Breslin in The Miracle Worker, Natalie Portman in The Diary of Anne Frank, TR Knight in A Life in the Theatre, C Zeta Jones in you know what, Reba in Annie Get Your Gun, Harry Connick in The Pajama Game (and now On A Clear Day), and many more.

Newintown, I don't think your examples support your premise. I don't think there was much safety in those roles (though some, like Connick, fit the bill), and I think Radcliffe was taking a huge risk in Equus. I think the bottom line is that a star has a very full schedule, and it may just be quicker to mount a revival than start a new project from scratch.

Choosing a vehicle that has already proven to work (no matter how long ago) for someone else (or several someone elses) is undeniably less risky than originating a role.

Yup!
...and I have the very unrealistic wish that Tony Awards for Performance and Direction to be divided into two categories: those for revivals and those for new work. Never happen, but I feel actors in revivals (especially leads) have a better chance of snagging Tonys.

"I guess, we need to define celebrity and star -- not easy to do."

Oh Patash, it's so simple!

Star = someone who by faith, hard work and good luck which meets opportunity is able to rise to their own occasion based on the merits of said strengths, talents and humility. Someone who has paid their dues and earned the right to be notable and or famous. Usually, someone who is happy to avoid all avenues of disrepute.

Celebrity = Snooki, Charlie Sheen, Anna Nicole Smith, OJ Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and the countless parade of losers who use their current notoriety to enhance their profiles, wallets or criminal records. They may have been talented at one point, but have since cast aside such god given gifts in favor of popularity for all the wrong reasons, in most cases.

Need I say more?

My friends reaction to the "haterz":

"People who argue about Dan getting started up with HP is feeble. It's obvious that the Harry Potter franchise got him started on his acting career and got him recognized as a potential actor for "How to Succeed..." Iit wasn't his "star power" that immediately earned him the role; by that messed up logic, I'm sure some celebrity like Angelina Jolie could audition for a Broadway play and get the part even if she couldn't sing or dance to save her life, all because she's hugely famous.

It isn't all about the fame, and directors know that better than either of us. You catch my drift?

Everyone dissing Dan is just opinions, so I'm not phased by it. I've heard very different reviews from people who've seen the musical firsthand, and all of them raved about how Dan nailed his role, nailed it. But everyone's opinion is different, so whatever. I think Dan's a great actor, and apparently some do not think the same."

Well, by his sound logic and non feeble argument Radcliffe is here to stay! Move over Sutton Foster because here comes an A-list actress! Do you hear that Broadway hopefuls? Don't come to open calls since you're just going be in the chorus.
