I'm curious is anyone is seeing theDallas Theater Center's HAIR, which will run September 22–October 22 in the Wyly Theatre. I heard it's a great production and a diverse case!
More info:
An immersive, in-the-round production of the landmark 1967 rock musical Hair is set to bow September 22 at the Dallas Theater Center starring Smash actor Jaime Cepero as Claude, which is helmed by artistic director Kevin Moriarty. Performances run September 22–October 22 in the Wyly Theatre. They are joined by Monique Abry as Crissy, Kia Nicole Boyer as Jeanie, Ayanna Edwards as Dionne, Chris Peluso as Berger, Christopher Llewyn Ramirez as Woof, as well as tribe members Kevin Curtis, Joey Donoian, Kelsey Leigh Ervi, Kyle Igneczi, Valton Jackson, Quintin Jones Jr., Laura Lites, Taylor Nash, Mayte Natalio, and Gabrielle Reyes. Hair has music by Galt MacDermot, with book and lyrics by James Rado and the late Gerome Ragni. The landmark musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1967 at the Public Theater prior to transferring uptown to Broadway in April 1968. Its score introduced the era-defining anthems “Age of Aquarius” and “Let the Sunshine In,” as well as “Easy to Be Hard,” “Frank Mills,” among others. Jo Winiarski designs the DTC set for Hair, which will place the audience and actors in a shared space for a communal musical “happening.” The production will have choreography by Ann Yee, music direction/supervision by Vonda K. Bowling, costume design by Karen Perry, sound design by Broken Chord, lighting design by Seth Reiser, and wig design by J. Jared Janas and Dave Bova.

I'm an ATTPAC usher and I worked it twice last week (previews). It's a ton of fun!!!
You are quite right about the diverse, young cast.
The seating, as you may have gathered, is GA but there are 4 "zones." If you have zone 1 or 2, you pay more and sit anywhere you want. Zones 3 and 4 are seated in certain areas of the house. But the actors are EVERYWHERE, so it's enjoyable no matter where you are. If you want to, ahem, participate, sit in the seats around the center floor area, or, if you want to be close to the actors but not necessarily become part of the show, sit anywhere near a staircase because they are up and down those areas constantly. I sat on the floor (in a chair) one night and it was cool to be right next to so much of the show; however, you have to be mindful about keeping your feet tucked in (so as not to trip the actors), etc, and at one point there was a scene unfolding somewhere behind me that required me to twist around. The second time I sat almost at the top of the Playground, near the slide, and had a great view of everything. From that vantage point, I could see almost the whole audience and really appreciate how the show is designed and staged so that you can have a fantastic experience no matter where you're sitting. The other seating areas in addition to the Playground are the Garden, Lounge, and Kitchen.
One other thing I want to mention is the Happening thirty minutes before each show. Instead of the usual DTC pre-show talk, this time it's a surprise. It's different fun activities and close interaction with the cast, and you definitely want to be at the theater in time for the Happening (which is also when the house opens, so you can also grab a seat at that time).
If you feel so inclined, dress like a hippie. Lots of people in the audience have been really getting into the spirit and it adds to the overall feeling of fun.
I can't wait to see it again the week after next! SO MUCH FUN!

Sold! I'll be there next weekend then. Quick question - how extensive is the nudity? I want to take my theater kid teenager, who will love it, and I don't mind the nudity or drug themes too much, but I'd like to give fair warning.

Well, it's full frontal nudity, both male and female. They're not simulating sex or anything, more like just all getting high and stripped their clothes off to be "free," I guess? But they ARE completely naked for a short time. I haven't timed it, but maybe a minute for them all to shed their clothes? If you think it would be awkward or if you think your kid would gawk too much, I would just recommend sitting up higher so the actors are not right in front of you. I actually found it kind of beautiful and situationally believable for the show, but I realize people have different sensitivities. DTC is recommending no one younger than high school age. But I bet your theater kid would love the whole experience. Kevin also directed a great version at Booker T. in 2016 (but without the nudity, of course).

You're so good at conveying the excitement and energy around this that I just bought tickets for tomorrow night! Need to go give some thought to our hippie attire. I can't wait. Thank you so much!

Hope you enjoy it as much as the volunteers do!
