Eh at least with the Republicans you know where you stand. Too many times I have seen the Democrats give us the "I feel your pain" schtick to get our votes then throw us under the bus as soon as they get any flack. DOMA, DADT anyone?

there are no gay republicans ... your boyfriend is a homosexual.

I'm a Republican and I'm for gay marriage. *shrug*

sporkgoddess: you rule!
but, in truth, if we rewind the tape to before the crazies took over, that's *exactly* how republicans used to think.
from a former life, i have a bunch of republican friends in DC who kind of look at each other and shrug their shoulders trying to figure out what on earth has happened to their party ...

Yeah, a lot of us feel that way. Not that I'm old enough to remember the way it was, but I know that true conservatism doesn't involve being against gay marriage.
Exactly Sporkgoddess, true conservatism doesn't invlove being against gay marriage.
But using the stance of a few republicans against gay marriage is a pretty good base for the liberal media to portray the whole party as believing in such.

The problem is that the religious right have become a huge base for the party and, IMO, it's alienating people. I want us to go back to our roots of small government and free market, and then maybe we wouldn't be seen as such a backwards party.
PiraguaGuy2 - for what it's worth, when I saw "Hair" a Democrat (LBJ) was president. He even got a mention -
LBJ took the IRT down to 4th Street, USA
When he got there what did he see?
The youth of America on LSD....

EXACTLY, and it seems many on this board are stereotyping and have fallen victim to this. And I take offense of being labeled as closed-minded just because my views on small government and fiscal conservativism more closely align me with republican politicians.
Yes, obviously more gays are democrats because more democrats support gays. But assuming uniformity in thought and labeling politicians and voters as such is quite ignorant.
I don't get the people who think gay republicanism is so strange. I get that there are some issues in the party with gays, yeah, but McCain did get 24% of the gay vote (or 26%? I forgot which). So it isn't completely unheard of
lol.

Three of my four partners are Gay Republicans and yes, they all know about each other and yes, we choose to define our family somewhat differently from the norm. Two of the three Gay Republicans are very socially conservative in spite of the fact that we are a rather large alternative family. One is socially liberal but fiscally conservative. He is in favor of gay marriage, but I think it's mostly for the tax breaks. The other two are anti-gay marriage through and through even though the five of us love each other with exactly the same level of commitment a heterosexual married couple experiences. In fact, we are exactly like a straight couple in almost every way except for what the five of us do together in the bedroom, which requires two king sized beds placed side by each.
We all saw a production of Hair together and me and the other liberal partners were the only ones who liked the song "Hashish." The other three hated the song "Sodomy" because the felt it was uncalled for. The most Rush Limbaughian of the group thought the song "Colored Spade" was the greatest song he ever heard. The group was split on "Walking in Space" once it was clear the song was not about NASA.
The one song everybody loved was "Good Morning, Starshine."
That's just one politically diverse alternative family's response.
That just made my night!

I'm really sorry, but I don't even understand what that means. There's an inherent contradiction baked into this sentence ... By definition, a social conservative oppposes precisely the alternative family arrangement these gentlemen appear to be in. So are they hypocrites, schizophrenic, or just confused?
I know you love 'em, but these boys appear to be practicing a huge (and, to the rest of us homos, tedious) double-standard.

now hold on a minute here ...
opposing gay marriage is not the stance of "a few republicans". it's in the party's platform for goodness sake. it gets trotted out at every convention and party meeting ... there are speeches, buttons, and signs.
it's one thing to say, "my alignment with republican fiscal policies matters more to me than my 'disalignment' with republican social policies, and therefore i'm going to be a republican." it's quite another to pretend that the party's enshrined values on social issues are somehow a minority position.
there's a river in egypt named for that one ...
=:o
Slight thread jack, but it's relevant...former NJ governor Christie Whitman, actually wrote a fascinating book called, "It's My Party, Too," where she laments the fact that the religious right has essentially hijacked the Republican party.
