So I am making my annual pilgrimage to NY in May, I got tickets for 9 to 5, and....Hair (which I am super excited about) however, my boyfriend is a true republican through and through. He's not too excited to see this show, I had to do a alot of convincing. For those republicans out there who have seen hair, have you enjoyed it?

I haven't seen Hair, true, but I enjoy the music. As I like to say, if I stuck to only music that agreed with my political views, I'd be listening to nothing but country. And especially with theatre's political bias, the same is true for musicals: if we could only sit through shows that were in line with our political beliefs, we'd be very limited in what we could enjoy.
It also depends though on what type of conservative he is, though. Actually, maybe not--I know a lot of social conservativs who are fine with that sort of subject matter.
I dont know? It depends on how he likes theater?
Well its like.. think about it - going to Orlando to the Holy Land Experience and sitting and watching those guys sing and praise Jesus Christ in costumes. HELL NO! you wont be able to make me sit and watch those crap! LOL.

I dunno, is that an apt comparison though? Hair has good music and I've heard that the cast is good as well. I was trying to think of a musical I'd compare it to seeing, but, um, I can't think of a single "conservative" musical. Maybe Evita because it bashes Peronism, but then Che Guevara is one of the main characters, so I think that's kind of negated.
Maybe Godspell, I guess.
While I'm not a Republican, I was talking to my Republican father after I saw Hair last weekend and he told me that he always loved the music and enjoyed the movie back when he saw it. While there are analogies that can be drawn from the show to the recent political past, it's prefectly possible simply to enjoy the show for what it was back when it premiered- really great music and a protest of the world of 1969.
Will he enjoy it? I don't know, but you certainly don't have to be a Democrat to like the show.
There really are gay republicans? I always thought that was just a punch line.
The show is not done in a matter that rubs their beliefs in your face...
It just shows what the hippies went through in the 60's...it doesn't necessarily bash politcal views at all, at least in my opinion.
Maybe Godspell, I guess.
I always thought Jesus was a big hippie, personally.
I'd have to agree with Spork, though. you can certainly enjoy something without necessarily agreeing with it. I'm a raging liberal, but I'm sure I could sit through a more conservative musical if I enjoyed the music and performances. since it is tougher to find those, though, I guess I can't really speak from experience.
at least it gives you food for thought, though. and it's always nice to be mentally stimulated by your entertainment.
I'm a Republican, and I like Hair. I'm really looking forward to seeing this production.
I think he will enjoy it. If not well...sucks for him I guess. Actually Jay we get along very well, we don't really discuss politics on a daily basis.

Guys, he may not be a religious right conservative. True conservatives actually are for gay marriage, or don't want the government involved in marriage at all.

I'm one of those moderates who just kinda votes for what he thinks is best. I personally really like HAiR, and at this point, the show isn't so political as it is cultural study. I highly doubt he'll find it offensive.
It definitely has an anti war message but on the whole I found it startlingly patriotic. Don't think anyone would find offense in it.

My boyfriend is a gay republican (yeah I don't understand it either)...we saw HAiR on Tuesday and he seemed like it a lot.
SNAFU -- I'm with you. I really the message while embracing an anti war; the theme struck me much strongly is definitely of making your own choices and being YOU. (Well, from the park's version anyway.) THREE WEEKS....I CAN'T WAIT!
It may have been politically charged by 1969's standards, but in 2009, it's fairly tame.
Unless he is conservative enough that he objects to rampant drug use, brief nudity, and language, it shouldn't be a problem..
dramamama.... oh boy are you in for a treat! Liked it better then the park.
I never saw anything politically offensive with Hair, even as a gay republican. Didn't really enjoy it that much, haha not my type of show, but that was just a taste thing, not a republican thing :P
Eh at least with the Republicans you know where you stand. Too many times I have seen the Democrats give us the "I feel your pain" schtick to get our votes then throw us under the bus as soon as they get any flack. DOMA, DADT anyone?

sporkgoddess: you rule!
but, in truth, if we rewind the tape to before the crazies took over, that's *exactly* how republicans used to think.
from a former life, i have a bunch of republican friends in DC who kind of look at each other and shrug their shoulders trying to figure out what on earth has happened to their party ...

Yeah, a lot of us feel that way. Not that I'm old enough to remember the way it was, but I know that true conservatism doesn't involve being against gay marriage.
