The problem with *any* broadway show going into a casino in Vegas is that the management doesn't want their clientele tied up in a theater for 2 1/2 hours. Shows in Vegas seldom run much over an hour, then folks are herded back into the casino where they belong.
Any show that goes in would have to be liberally cut to fit into the time allotments.

no way.
Mamma Mia runs at Mandalay Bay with the full 2.5 hour version -- intermission included.
Hairspray would run much better than the Producers I think

Posted: 1/31/04 at 12:24pmGlad to hear the "powers that be" have reconsidered the policy. I admit it's been some time since I've been to Vegas...it's on the list, the list is long, the bank balance short.....

I think Hairspray would play better to the masses that now flock to Vegas.....families. Hairspray is consistantly pulling them in whereas they had to bring back the original stars of the Producers to help the dip in ticket sales.
Plus I'm ready to see BwayGuy2 LIVE!

Posted: 1/31/04 at 12:38pmHey gang, the current hope is that casino's can run full 2hr productions, here's wishing it works! As someone who did a few "shortened" version I can tell you as a performer you are DEAD after them. In "Forum" a number of years ago,I NEVER left the stage..not that I was complaining! There is also a rumor they are building a theater for PHANTOM out there too.

sheek, how shortened were these versions?
I'm facinated by these 'Broadway goes to Vegas' shows.
Lots of big stars did them from the late '50s on.
The money was reportedly VERY good - the stars made out better in Vegas than they would have in Hollywood or Broadway.

Posted: 1/31/04 at 4:03pmI hate seeing shows in Vegas. It is a weird crowd that has een drinking, gambling, and on their feet most of the day.

both shows would be awesome here!! I wonder how they will revamp the theatre ... end of february the offical announcement will be made!!
and yes a bway show here is wierd but mamma mia is doing very well and i think hairspray would be better than the producers just cuz you can bring your younger children to the show ... something for the crazy parents that actually consider bringing someone under 21 to this town.

Posted: 1/31/04 at 6:28pmPersonally, Hairspray would be a lot more exciting to me. It would also be a nice compliment to Mamma Mia! which I recommend as a "must see" when in Vegas. The cast is phenomenal.

Posted: 2/1/04 at 3:26pmI live near New York, and I love to visit Las Vegas, but not for Broadway musicals. I think they're great for the locals, just as in any other city, but when I go to Vegas, bring on the show girls! Best show in town: Jubilee!

yes Jubilee is my favorite "vegas show" ... my fav part is the titanic scene ...
jubilee now offers backstage tours 2 times a week ... i think its like 20 bucks or something reasonable and a cast member takes you through backstage, a costume room, a dressing room and onto the stage then you sit in the theatre and have a quick Q&A. i learned so much taking the tour I want to go back again!!!

I remember seeing Diet Starlight Express years ago. It was chopped up and squeezed into 72 minutes with no intermission. I really didn't want to go, but I was with my brother and it's his FAVORITE show. I know they are now discovering the advantages of the full-scale Broadway shows as it brings in a whole new audience that wants to see the show, yet can't make it up to NYC. I thought it was kind of funny that even Las Vegas, the world capital of tacky shows, rejected Notre Dame de Paris. I guess you have to be European to fully appreciate it. Whatever plays there has to be fun and/or visually spectacular to compete with the Vegas atmosphere. Hairspray, The Producers, 42nd Street, Phantom of the Opera, Crazy For You, Wicked or Thoroughly Modern Millie would all be viable choices.
With all the illusionists in Vegas, I always thought an updated version of The Magic Show would be a happy medium. Update the score and book a bit, add new state-of-the-art illuisions and visual effects, use a popular illusionist and a couple of familiar talents and you'll have a combination of three Vegas shows in one! Put it in the Monte Carlo. That place needs to be good for SOMETHING. It's possibly the dullest casino on the strip.

Posted: 2/2/04 at 3:32pmI would think Wicked would require way to much thinking and listening for a Las Vegas audience. And I don't mean that in a insulting way. Most tourists in Vegas that have been gambling and drinking would be better off with something stricktly visual. Thats probably why Mama Mia works so well there. Updated On: 2/2/04 at 03:32 PM
