You're missing the point though, I'm not doubting their singing ability, or lack of it. I'm just pointing out that the OCR makes uncomfortable listening because of the extreme styles of singing, that may be fitting on stage. However, when you are listening to the recording at home without the characters in role in front of you, it is off putting.

Playbill: Do you really think that Ethel Mermon has a "magical, melodic voice"? Believe me, I am definately not refuting her amazing talent and the dynasty that she was, but this seems like a very weird choice when you're trying to contrast character voices with pretty, "melodic" ones. I think Ethel Mermon would be an example of the successful character actress side of the argument. (She's sort of an in-between in my book)

It scares me slightly that you didn't include Carol Channing or Kristen Chenoweth in your post. I intended for my sarcasm to be evident when I posted about 3 women who, though successful, had very abnormal voices (sometimes grating to SOME PEOPLE- I could listen to them all day!).

Personally, I had no problem with Marissa or Harvey and they deserved their awards, and it is sad Mary Bond Davis didn't win a Tony too, She was spectacular onstage and in the OCR. It works for me, and since the have their Tonys - seems I'm not alone on this one.
I always thought Bette would step in at some point for a turn at "Miss Baltimore Crabs" since she had cash in the show, Perhaps she will do the film with Travolta - Maybe you'll all like his Edna better come film time.
