Lets hope he does a track on every album he does in the future then in around 12 years time we will have a London Cast Recording!

See, I don't think Hairspray is a kind of show that needs a name to sell it. I mean, yes, people did flock to see the show when it opened because Harvey was in the show. But, there had been people who had become fans of the show long after the original cast had left. I think that the show is good enough and the material is strong enough that it shouldn't need a big star to do any role in the show.

It would be nice to have Harvey here- but they'd have to pay him a lot of money im sure- but it would be worth it!

"low rent celebrities like Ken, Freddie Starr, David Griffin, Su Pollard, Cheryl Baker etc" TRUE, They are kinda low rent, BUT Su Pollard can actually sing REALLY well.... she can belt out a good'un if needs be!

AND.... Curly from corrie wasn't Caractacus- he was the Child Cathcer!

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

managed to catch this last night with a friend, neither of us had seen the stage version before and we both couldn't stop smiling the whole way through! the audience was mad, loved every second. although it was a little embarrassing when we were the only 2 in the entire grand circle who stood up and danced at the end :)

michael was amazing as edna. i can understand now why so many people stress how important it is to get an actor who plays edna as a woman, not a man in drag.

he and nigel absolutely lost it in "timeless to me". it was at the whole 'you can't tell if someone's jewish, yes you can' gag. they just lost it and michael, after laughing so hard for quite a long time, actually at one stage, quite loudly, went "i think a little pee came out" which proceeded to bring the house down and keep nigel and himself in further histerics. it was one of the funniest and best 'i love live theatre' moments i've witnessed. will be sad to see him go

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

Them "losing it" happens at every performance and is as authentic as Edna's wig. Or hair, I should say, as the wig itself is pretty authentic...

This is probably a ridiculous idea, but what about Matt Lucas? He's obviously got the dressing up and right proportions, but might turn it into the Marjorie Dawes show... but it would be interesting, and would put bums on seats??

(preparing to duck now, for the onslaught of "don't be ridiculous!!!" responses...)

awww really? that's slightly dissapointing that the "losing it" is staged. although i gotta say it didn't come across that way at all. maybe i just got sucked in! haha

Yes, Edna must be played by a man. The role was conceived and written and such to the point that it is in the licensing agreement for companies presenting the show. The gender-bending goes hand in hand with the major themes in the show. It is not an "optional" choice as with a female or male as Peter Pan.

True, but there is ad-libbing that goes on that makes it fresh.

It hasn't always been done by a man!!

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

When has it not?

I'm seriously curious, because I always put in bios that it's my dream to be the 'first-ever female Edna Turnblad' (though, I mean, I don't actually want to... it's just something I say). If it turns out I wasn't the first, my spirits would be crushed.

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

My vote for Edna goes to Harvey. I thought he was superb on the OBC album and would love to see him live as part of the fab London production!

If not, my second vote would go to....Dame Edna Everage! I know that she is a woman and women traditionally don't play Edna, but I think her gigastar status and singing talents would make her a fantastic choice.

The only problem is sadly her age. And also her manager's age. Barry Humphries is getting quite old and may not be able to cope with all of the success that his star would bring to the role for 8 performances a week. Although for a limited run, I think Dame Edna would sell out the show!

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

I think I'm right in saying that, years ago when the London production was originally being planned, Dame Edna was indeed up for the role of Edna.

How about Matt Lucas as Edna and David Walliams as Wilbur?

Or Nick Frost and Simon Pegg? Eddie Large and Sid Little? Bob Hoskins and Nicholas Lyndhurst? James Corden and Mathew Horne? Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss? Peter Kay and Harry Hill?

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

Harvey would be amazing, but I also love the Russ Abbot idea. I'm not at all keen on Biggins and I'm not sure if he really is that popular with the public any more. He hit saturation point about 12 months ago for most people I know.

Im still trying to find out where that production was staged that had a female Edna! Bear with me!

I LOVE THE IDEA OF BOB HOSKINS! LOL

re: 'Hairspray' Gets A New Do

Wasn't that female Edna in one of those "illegal" productions wither in Finland or Denmark? with very strange sets with giant teddybears on one scene?

It could very well have been, yes. I remember seeing some production pics and it looked AWFUL!
The Edna was shameful.
