I can't wait to hear this score. I can't say it enough.

I just got back from Friday night's performance (March 27th). I have to say I enjoyed it. I didn't LOVE it, but I really enjoyed myself, and I would consider it money well spent. First off, the production is so well designed and directed. I just kept thinking about how much time and thought went into it. For a show done mostly on a subway train, the actors kept moving, and all of their movements felt fluid without any notable "why the hell did they just cross?" kind of moments.
That said, I thought the score was so-so. None of the numbers really STUCK, but they worked in the context of the show. Maybe they get better on repeat listen? Everyone sounded great, and the beginning of the song in the middle of the show, it starts with the Asian character singing, started out with a beautiful melody song by the Asian actress ( sorry, I don't have my playbill ), but then it just delved into unmelodic territory. While I don't think it's a major discredit to the story that the songs aren't hummable, it still begs the question as to why shouldn't be hummable? Sure, they progress the story (which they do nicely), but surely one of the songs would have a memorable tune. But not so much.
Overall though the acting was suburb (Jenny Powers hit it out of the park! I loved to hate her character, then out-of-nowhere I'm crying with her!), and the show is pretty well written with a few mishaps. The concept and story line is so weird, an almost absurd that the whole "Tooth Fairy" thing didn't really seem that jarring, though the song was awful. And Gleason's number is still awful. I think it's partly due to her vocals. She doesn't have a strong voice, so when everyone is singing with her her own voice gets drowned out, therefore taking out all the punch of the number. I think she would have been better suited to a ballad. And the show needed a nice ballad.
But yeah, in summary, ha, I enjoyed it, and I would go back and see it, and I just might!
