Happy Birthday, Sweet Charity

'Sweet Charity' opened on Broadway 46 years ago today, 29th Jan 1964, at the Palace Theatre, New York.
The show ran for a then respectable 608 performances.

Broadway has seen two revivals, 1986 with Debbie Allen and most recently back in 2005 with Christina Applegate.

London currently has its third production running at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
Running since Dec 2009 until march 2010, a West End transfer is almost certainly on the cards.

The original Broadway production opened in London at the Prince Of Wales Theatre in July 1967 and ran for 484.
The London production starred Juliet Prowse, a wonderful singer/dancer who was a big name in the 60s and 70s but now, sadly, forgotten.
Famed for her legs, as you can see in the pics below.

Londons most recent production starred Bonnie Langford at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 1998 for a disappointing run of just 5 months.

...and then of course there's the 1969 movie starring Shirley McLaine, Sammy Davis Jnr and Chita Rivera.

The movie ran in one Boston cinema for over 2 years.

My parents saw the original London production but Juliet Prowse had been replaced by someone called Gretchen Wyler.

Gretchen Wyler frequently went into roles on Broadway that Gwen Verdon originated - DAMN YANKEES, SWEET CHARITY etc.
