I agree that he does not posses the vocal ability that a John Raitt did to do the role as written.

But then again, when did vocal ability come into play for current Broadway? As long as you have been on "The Swan", that's all that matters for producers.

I think the Toni Colette idea is rather interesting. I saw the famous Tony winning revival of Noel Cowards's PRIVATE LIVES many years ago where Brian Bedford was so laid back as to be almost comatose, and Tammy Grimes had so much energy she was ricocheting of the walls. The combination was very funny and gave a real tension and sexuality to their relationship. With a super cool Sid Sorokin, maybe a firecracker Babe Williams is the answer.

I loved Harry in South Pacific...

Actually, I just really love Harry. He puts on great concerts, his energy is amazing and he obviously really loves he is doing. I've been wanting him to come to Broadway for years...very exciting!

It really is about time for this to be revived. Although it's not one of my favorite shows, it certainly has tons of charm and a great score. I musically directed a production of this over the summer - and while it was hard at times to enjoy doing it - it was exciting and I learned a great deal - I'm very excited to hear a new cast perform it. I thought Harry was fine in SP, and decent on W&G. His acting has yet to impress me, but he certainly has the perfect voice for Sid. I would love to see Toni Collette as Babe - I wouldn't have thought of her off hand, but she has a fantastic voice and is a GREAT GREAT actress. Other possibilities are Marla Schaffell, Sarah Berry, Jane Lanier, Karen Ziemba, or Isabell Keating. As far as Hines, I would love to see John Cariani or, dare I say, Matthew Broderick.
I think this could be a really good show - let's just be thankful that Jerry Zak's isn't involved. I kind of hope, though, that Fosse's oringinal STEAM HEAT choreography is used - it's too perfect, but I'm excited to see what Marshall would do with it.

We shall see...

I love me some of Connick's junior...

31 years is about time for a new revival. I just don't understand why PAJAMA GAME is being revived when SOUTH PACIFIC still has not been revived in over 50 years... I wish Cameron Mackintosh would mount his revival of the RSC SOUTH PACIFIC before he brings MARRY POPPINS to Broadway...

of course I wish he would mount his OLIVER!, MY FAIR LADY and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK too, but he seems to be shying away from Broadway... who can blame him really...

of course, if he had PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, OLIVER!, SOUTH PACIFIC, MY FAIR LADY, WITCHES OF EASTWICK and MARRY POPPINS all playing on Broadway at the same time he could be the MOST POWERFUL PRODUCER IN THE WORLD!!! *insert evil laugh*

Kristin Chenoweth should absolutely NOT be Babe - it's scary, but not surprising, that someone would suggest that. Sorokin is HC Jr...so there's no point in discussing other options...

John Cariani and Matthew Broderick are a little young to play Hines. I actually think Marc Kudisch would make a fine Hines.

I love the idea of Harry Connick Jr. playing Sid. He has the perfect voice/look, and he would bring in a crowd. It's a great exposure for a good musical.

As far as Babe is concerned, Rebecca Luker, Laura Benanti, or maybe even Jane Krakowski would all be great.

I don't believe that HC Jr understands the energy level and commitment that go into a leading role on Broadway. I think the question will be who will be waiting in the wings to assume the role when he can't hack it.

I'm a big fan of Harry's musical side. I think he's got a great voice, is an amazing writer and arranger, and always brings alot of enthusiasm to his music.

BUT!

I don't think he could act his way out of a paper bag.

There were rumours floating about when the hunt was on for who was going to replace Hugh Jackman in TBFO, that Harry was VERY interested. So, him doing this really does not suprise me.

A good, fun show. But can Harry handle the grind? I don't know.
