Saw tonight's performance and was blown away by Ms. Richardson. I took your review into consideration when watching her, and it was obvious that she has really improved in the past week.
Whether or not you enjoy this revival pretty much depends on how willing you are to see such an unconventional Stanley. I thought Reilly was very frightening and human. He still needs time to get a firm grasp on him (so to speak), but he's on the right track. Ryan and Bauer were rock-solid.
Overall, terrific production. Great sets, sound, and lighting design. First act was overly long and some of the directorial touches were odd, but most of the audience members were in tears by the time it was over. Happy tears, that is.

Broadway86: yours is the first overall positive, and frankly, exciting to read about. A dissenting vote means this is a button-pushing revival, worthy of differing POVs and reactions (isn't that the hallmark of great theater? I remember the early previews of SWEENEY TODD ... there was no web to post on, but the word on the street was mixed to "no way!")
Can you share any more? Everyone says Richardson does her homework in previews, and folks are saying that she's moving forward with every single performance, as you indicate.

Richardson was everything I wanted to see in that character: Graceful, vulnerable, emotionally fragile, disconnected, and sad.
When she speaks to Stanley about her gentleman friend, it's as if she truly beleives it. All of her act II scenes are riveting. I have seen many productions of this play, but when Richardson first set eyes on the doctor, my throat clogged up.
This performance will, without a doubt, polarize audiences. But, I loved her.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 2:31pmThanks. I hate to sound like a total dork, but do Natasha and John sign after the show?

Posted: 3/31/05 at 2:32pmThey were both very sweet about signing afterwards. Reilly was the last out and was surprised that people were actually waiting.

MEF-
Ironically, Reilly came out first, and was very quiet and polite. After about an hour of waiting, Natasha finally came out. She looked beautiful, and was very nice. As she was signing my Playbill, I looked at her and said, "I am not worthy". She laughed and said, "Oh, stop it."
