Has Anyone Seen MEDIEVAL PLAY?

Curious on people's thoughts. I just found out about this today, strangely.

Iobviously haven't, but reports from two friendshave basically said that Spamalot covered similar material, but was actually funny. It's too bad, I love a lot of Keneth Landergan's work, This Is Our Youth is brilliant as is You Can Count On Me, but he did write the screenplay for Rocky and Bullwinkle as well, so...

When it comes to anything medieval, consult Mr. Roxy. He was in the prime of his youth during the entire Medieval Period.

I haven't heard a positive thing from anyone personally and I think most report on the board involved people leaving at intermission, but I'd suggest, if you haven't already, reading the NYTimes review. It offers a nice overview and also indicates and addresses some of its possible problems.

It's intriguing and sounds ambitious, but it also sounds like the bad outweighs the good.

"This Is Our Youth is brilliant"

"Brilliant?" Oh my God, here we go again.

As for Medieval Play, avoid at all costs. It's a monumental calamity. I'd say about 1/4 of the audience left at intermission at the performance I attended.

Hmm... then perhaps it's got some redeeming qualities, after all.

I think Brantley gets it right but if you want to read a more glowing review, check out Teachout's review in the Journal. It's a show with downtown sensibilities in a midtown venue so a lot of the more strident negatives are coming from people who are just not that into it.

Well I hated SPAMALOT but love Tate Donovan. So I feel a bit like Natalie Imbruglia.

I haven't seen it, but a friends sisters cousin said her hairdressers niece knew the guy who takes tickets.

And they hated it.

Belabored. A mess. Extremely well acted. Gorgeous set. In love with its own repetitive schtick which is occasionally hilarious but often not. Very funny observations and ironic gimmicks get beaten to death as if the audience were too dumb to get them the first or even the fiftieth time. Monty Python can provide more insight and wit in ten seconds of material than Lonnergan can in an all but unendurable 2 1/2 hours. Heather Burns is wonderful but Hamilton and Donovan, both brilliant, are strapped with a script that forces them into the same sophomoric joke for two long acts. Still when Lonnergan is funny, he is very funny.

I could kiss you, After Eight. I've never gotten the love for THIS IS OUR YOUTH.

I've never been to a Medieval play but did go to a Renaissance Festival once in upstate NY. The turkey legs were surprisingly good.
