Have Another Drink My Dark-Eyed Beauty

Posted: 12/2/04 at 8:44pmI have a couple of questions about that little segment between Elphie's mother and her supposed lover in "No One Mourns the Wicked". I heard that was Joel Gray's voice when he sings during that part, but someone else went onstage at that time. And since he was the wizard, is that supposed to imply that Elphie's mother had an affair or something with the wizard, even though they don't really expand on that? Also, is that now replaced by George Hearn's voice, or is Joel's voice going to remain in that part? And do they change it along with the understudies?

Posted: 12/2/04 at 8:45pmI only know that it implies that Melena was having an affair with the Wizard.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 8:48pmUm, who ever plays the wizard sings it. Fiyero is the one onstage dancing. Later on, the green bottle comes back into the show and they replay the singing in slow motion as if the wizard were having a memory.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 8:49pmEverytime Ive seen it, the voice has changed with who was playing the Wizard that night.. First time it was Joel, then Sean, then George the last two times. Is this what you're asking?

I thought it was a prerecorded voice, at least for that section for the wizard, since Fiyero is onstage dancing.
EDIT - Merrydothe: Yes; thanks.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 8:50pmYeah it is pre-recorded. I imagine they spent sometime recording everyone who could possibly play the Wizard--just in case.

"...is that supposed to imply that Elphie's mother had an affair or something with the wizard..."
of course it's suposed to imply she had an affair or something with the wizard. haven't you read that pornographic trash of a novel, which, btw, kids under 8 are reading now...???

Ha. Well, it's not porn! There are some GREAT lines in there and its very creative.
But, I do think there should be some sort of a warning on the outside about how it's not suitable for children.... or actually, anyone under 16 (maybe not that old).
I especially think the ones that have the pictures of the musical in it need to have a disclaimer. If just going by the musical, one would expect something bubbly or Harry Potter-esque.

yes. my favorite is the line about how her robe opens and exposes her breasts, but she's so proud she doesn't care, or something like that... ugh... classic literature...
of course, the ragtime novel has the jerk off scene at the end of chapter eight, so it's not like any other novels that musicals were based on are innocent either, I guess...

The jerk off scene in Ragtime was classic.
No, I like the part about her pubic hair looking purple in the moonlight. Fiyero's a perv!
I don't work backstage, but I've been backstage many times because I have friends in the show.

Posted: 12/2/04 at 10:16pmI actually started getting a bit wide-eyed in the beginning with Melena and TurtleHeart- this coming from a girl who read "Go Ask Alice" in sixth grade (on my own, btw). I was even more wide-eyed when my 13 yo sister wanted to read it.

As much I love the novel, I still get a bit confused by it. Read it four times now- I'm *still* lost about Yackle.
However, the idea that Melena didn't have a normal child until Shell (with Frex) makes much more sense than...what's the stage version? "Child of two worlds?" Load of bull.

Yea, that purple pubic hair thing took me a bit by surpise. I thought of a anatomically correct for a human Barney.
One of my favorite quotes though is, "They moved together, blue diamonds on a green field"

Yeah, it's a pretty sensual book....
Of course I was picturing Joey as Fiyero and me as Elphaba during that scene!

Oh, I read it LONG before I got the OCR.
Wicked is interesting- normally I have a preference if a favorite book has a visual adaptation. But I like both versions- Maguire's leans towards Baum, Schwartz towards MGM (from what I know).
