Well, those that know me, know that I can barely contain myself with the news that HAZEL FLAGG is coming out on CD. One of those 50s also-rans, HAZEL FLAGG has a brassy, lively Jule Styne-Bob Hilliard score that I've always loved, as well as Helen Gallagher in her prime, and sharp performances from Benay Venuta, Jack Whiting and Thomas Mitchell. I'm crazy about "I'm Glad I'm Leaving," "You're Gonna Dance With Me, Willie," "Laura de Maupassant," "How Do You Speak to an Angel," "Everybody Loves to Take a Bow," "The World Looks Beautiful Today" and "Every Street's A Boulevard (in Old New York)". Between Hazel Flagg, Make a Wish and Ankles Aweigh hitting CD shelves, it's raining 50s flops!
What's most exciting about these 50's flops releases (besides the ability to hear the MARVELOUS Helen Gallagher) is that many may end up discovering that even the flops had better scores than some of today's hits!
Run, children. Run, buy and learn!
Love Hazel Flagg too. I'm also partial to another Jule Styne "obscurity" - One Night Stand. While some of the songs in that show are clearly throwaways, Styne's score is great...
