The exterior locations add the epic grandeur of the old Hollywood musicals (like MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS), which I still find appropriate for a film version of HELLO, DOLLY! The original stage production hinted at it; the 1969 film brought it to its full glory. Then there's Streisand, doing a little Mae West to sassy-up her Dolly Levi Gallagher.

I agree Brody. The film works beautifully on its own. And the Blu Ray is a treasured part of my collection. The Netflix version doesn't sound as rich in sound. So I never bothered with it.

Can you check for me in the subtitles on blu ray appear for the songs? I have the dvd and subtitles are on for the spoken dialogue but not for the song numbers. I Don't want to waste money on a blu ray if it does not have it

It does indeed have the subtitles during the songs and it is worth buying.

Sorry Brody. I read the question that was addressed to me and I answered and then continued reading.
It's really not a terrible movie and a lot of great Broadway shows have suffered far worse fates when brought to film, but I do have to admit that I find Michael Crawford to be truly awful in the film. He grates my nerves so much every time he's on screen.
Sure, Babs might have been too young for the role, but she definitely commits and is quite funny (and of course sings the score better than anyone ever has and probably every will).
I agree, Michael Crawford Is his usual hammy self - absolutely horrendous mugging and over acting.
I think it's probably the best stage-to-screen adaptation of a classic musical, mainly because Barbra is just so good. I don't care if she's too young, I like her Dolly almost more than I like her Fanny Brice. Because of this and other reasons, I couldn't stand Bette as Dolly (although I love her as a person.) But the whole movie- the costumes, choreography, and just general hugeness of the whole production is incredible.
