I am on the board for a theatre and we need a comedy to fill a slot in the season. It has to be a big moneymaker(something well known or something that will we can market well).
Suggestions PLease!
Noises Off!
Nunsense
Although it's a bit dated, I love "Same Time, Next Year"
Rather bitterweet, but "Driving Miss Daisy"
Do we really need another production of "Steel Magnolias?"
dinner at eight
the royal family
stage door

Crimes of the Heart
The House of Blue Leaves
If you've got the budget and a dynamite actress, "Auntie Mame."

It has to be a straight play, or a play "with music". We have recently done Noises Off, Nunsense, Steel Magnolias, Crimes of the Heart, and Same time next year.
We are in a bit of a Pickle@!

Many versions of this play, but I recommend the version written by Bill Irwin and Mark O'Donnell. An hilarious farce. It's not that well-known, but Bill Irwin is pretty well-known among the theater community. Definitely market-able and an especially fun play. Includes a chase/dance sequence at the end.

not CRIMES OF THE HEART! I dispise that play!!!!!!
The Tale of the Allergist's Wife - hysterical
The Goat can also be very funny, but it's more of a drama.
Go with a great dark comedy, like AUNT DAN AND LEMON.
If your group is really daring...."The Ritz!"
Gawd! I love that movie!

What's wrong with Crimes of the Heart?
I'm not a CRIMES OF THE HEART fan, either. Many, many flaws. How did it win the Pulitzer Prize?
Moon Over Buffalo
or classics like
Importence of Being Earnest
or
Much Ado About Nothing
hahaha thats one of my favorite plays. Its hysterical esp with the right cast.
MOON OVER BUFFALO is lacking something ver essential for a farce-comedy.
I stick with AUNT DAN AND LEMON or MORNINGS AT 7
I'm partial to Arscenic and Old Lace myself

"How did it win the Pulitzer Prize?"
Because Beth Henley combined absurdist comedy and drama so well.
what about a day in the life of Joe egg? or the complete works of shakespeare abridged.
What was absurdist about CRIMES OF THE HEART? It was a straight forward romantic comedy. We're not talking Ionesco here.
lend me a tenor
charley's aunt
noises off
inspecting carol
taming of the shrew
