After reading the article, I'm still confused. The only way she can get an Italian passport for her child is if he was born in Italy or she had Italian citizenship. Her grandfathers status won't change a thing. I lived in Italy for 8 years and certainly understand why she would want to live there!!
Italian records are spotty at best, but it would be fun to try and find those records. Anyone heading to Sicily soon?
