Adam, rent the original movie. It's fabulous.....and anything with Olivia DeHavilland, Rossano Brazzi (WOOF), Yvette Mimiexx....and George Hamilton as Fabrizio..........an amazing move.
I agree that the show is depressing. To me, the show, and final song, seem to say that love is for the immature and intelligence and maturity ruin/let you see through the pure innocence of love.
Besides that I think the book and Guettel's lyrics are a mess and really don't understand what everyone sees in the show.

I owe you an apology, adam chris. I hadn't noticed that you were the original poster, and thought you were derailing the thread (not that that would be an excuse for my poor manners).
And if you were serious about the ADD, then I really, really apologise.
I commend you for trying a musical form that you're unaccustomned to. Some musicals are flashy, and all you have to do is sit back and take it all in. Some make you work a little harder, like Light in the Piazza.
I think mostly, the piece is acclaimed more for its performances than its substance. Victoria Clark's "Dividing Day" is one of the most touching moments I have ever seen in live theatre, but I'm unsure how I would have felt about it had I not seen it.
Also, I'd say it's not so much depressing as it is bittersweet.
Don't feel too bad about not getting it. The book is a bit of a mess, not to mention half of it is in Italian.
Again, I'm very sorry for having been rude to you.
Thanks Ghostlight2. I appreciate that.
