Help! What play should I see?????
Help! What play should I see?????#0
Posted: 11/13/03 at 11:21amGoing to NYC this weekend. I was just wondering, do you need a great understanding of Anna Karenina to enjoy (or understand) Anna in the Tropics. Is it relaively accessable? Also, is The Violet Hour really as much of a mess as some critics say? In other words, what should I see if I'm in the mood for a play (with a significant amount of substance)

Posted: 11/13/03 at 2:00pmif you haven't seen TAKE ME OUT yet, try that, some amazing stuff. Or there's two new-ish one-woman plays: GOLDA'S BALCONY and OLDEST CONFEDERATE WIDOW (which may not be just Burstyn, can't remember). But i think either ANNA or VIOLET would have merits and maybe frustrations. Get a buddy and decide together so you have someone to talk it over with!

Posted: 11/13/03 at 3:12pmYes, I have seen Take Me Out: A SEAMLESS blend of comedy and drama with top-notch actors. I was wondering if The Violet Hour had the same qualities...

Posted: 11/13/03 at 3:14pmif i were there, i'd choose VIOLET to see how it compares with TAKE ME OUT. There is also the chance that ANNA will have more regional productions than VIOLET. The two one-woman pieces may have a better chance at a regional life, as well.

Posted: 11/13/03 at 3:30pmI have recently seen both of the shows you mentioned. I think I favor Anna in the Tropics over The Violet Hour personally and I enjoyed The Retreat From Moscow. If you can see Golda's Balcony (as TxTwoStep mentioned) you won't regret it. Also, I Am My Own Wife is unforgetable and truly amazing.

Posted: 11/13/03 at 5:15pmIf you see only one play while you are in New York go to the Manhattan Theatre Club and see IRON. It is a good play with a great performance by Lisa Emery. It is heavy drama though, if you'd prefer a comedy go see MATT & BEN (if you can get tickets).

I would have recommended TAKE ME OUT at one time, but Daniel Sunjata is rarely in it these days. I've had tickets for five performances since mid-September, and his understudy Michael Duvert has gone on. Duvert is fine, but Sunjata and O'Hare's chemistry was one of the joys of the play. I've been told that Sunjata definitely appears on the weekend so you may try then if you want to see it.
By the way, the new guy Maximillian Alexander is absolutely breathtaking in person.

I am personally looking foward to seeing "Rose's Dilemma" which is the Neil Simon one starring Mary Tyler Moore. But remember it is still in new previews, and doesn't officially open until early/mid December, so I don't know how good it is right now.
There is Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, but I've heard Ashley Judd isn't really good in the role of Maggie the Cat.
