Is it possible for either of them to get nominated for Best Original Score? The music in each was superb!
Regarding History Boys....I'm specifically referring to the music playing during the projections in History Boys.

Posted: 4/30/06 at 10:03pmNot true. Plays can most definitely be nominated for best score. The Pillowman was eligible last season, and I know in the past other plays were eligible as well.

Posted: 4/30/06 at 10:04pmI don't think the music is orginal in History Boys. In fact, I'm pretty sure of it.

Posted: 4/30/06 at 10:21pmAll the music in History Boys is pretty famous 80s Brit pop that were all top ten hits in the US from groups like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Madness etc ......

Posted: 4/30/06 at 11:59pmHaven't seen INISHMORE yet, but the nice THREE DAYS OF RAIN SCORE should be deemed eligible and is more deserving of a nomination than TARZAN, LESTAT, etc. It won't happen, but it's still better.

Posted: 5/1/06 at 12:09amThere wasn't any original music in "Inishmore." Aside from the song at the end (which may or may not be called "The Patriot Game") which is definitely not original, because it existed before, there really is no music--just loud bangs.

Music in the History Boys included...
Baggy Trousers (Madness)
Weak in the Presence of Beauty (Alison Moyet)
Rio (Duran Duran)
Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye (Gracie Fields)
Sing as We Go (Gracie Fields)
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered (from Pal Joey)
Goody Two Shoes (Adam Ant)
I know I'm missing the French song but I can't recall its title off hand. But no, none of its music is original.

Original scores for plays have been nominated in the past. Nothing says the score has to have lyrics.

Yes, usually the category is worded something like, "Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Stage."
Jeanine Tesori's score for the 1999 revival of Twelfth Night was nominated for Best Score. So, it is possible for a play to get a nomination. That is, if it's eligible and actually has original music.
