Congrats to Madeline! It also seems very deserved. She went Harvard! http://www.playbill.com/article/24-year-old-conductor-makes-history-at-broadways-waitress-tonight

Was so great to see this was happening! I love how much of a supportive environment "Waitress" continues to be.

My sister went to Harvard and who cares?

You just never expect musical prodigies to be coming out of Harvard!

She didn't make history by going to Harvard, though. She made history by reportedly being the youngest female conductor on Broadway.

I was saying it seemed like she deserved to be the youngest pit conductor on Broadway, because she went to Harvard. I'm well aware other conductors may have attended Harvard.

She has worked her way to where she is; her resume is quite impressive. The fact that she went to Harvard doesn't mean she "deserves" anything, but it does indicate that she is intelligent and has a strong work ethic.

Is she the youngest conductor ever? Or just the youngest female conductor?

From the article:
"At age 24 she is believed to be the youngest woman to conduct in a Broadway pit."

I find it strange that they refer to Waitress as having a "pit" when the band is onstage for the entire duration of the show. Where does she stand anyway, since the band is onstage? I understand the band being on stage looks like an act performing at the diner, but surely having a visible conductor spoils the immersion?!?

The woman playing the piano on stage is the conductor. "Pit" is the slang used to refer to the band regardless of their position in the theater.

I know, but is she the youngest conductor ever? Are there younger men who've conducted?

Yes. Off the top of my head, just this past season Sean Grandillo conducted Spring Awakening at ages 22-23.

The article states she's the youngest female conductor.

this thread is a hot mess, but it's also a poorly written article.

If buzzfeed had a cute female conductor article to go along with the male one, she'd be on it, am I right?
