They did the renovations of the Walter Kerr, Lunt-Fontanne and a lot of the interior work of the Ford Center/Hilton.

If not for Disney & The Lion King, the New Amsterdam would be a worse wreck than when they bought it or it would be gone. For this alone, Disney should be congratulated by the theater community for bringing an architectural gem & history laden theater back from the dead. By the way, the same team that designed the New Amsterdam were also architects on the Lyceum

The Walter Kerr was originally designed by Herbert J Krapp who also did the Majestic. For a time, the Kerr was the ABC Ritz theater

The Lunt Fontaine now looks gorgeous inside & out

I really don't know how this discussion turned from what the original topic was to a pro/con discussion of restoring theatres.

Well to get back on the subject (since nobody else was doing it.) I don't think it's annoying in the least. Big theatres house big shows, big shows are supposed make big bucks, so they can stay as long as they want. I'd rather that than have a constant cycle of bad shows in big theatres.

Sometimes shows move to bigger/smaller theaters, doesnt happen a lot, but it can happen if it needs to in order to find spots for new shows...

Or hey, maybe theyll just build more theaters

Mamma Mia could probably move into a smaller house when its sales dwindle some day. Lion King, Wicked and Phantom, though, are crammed into their theatres with lots of set to contend with, so I'd bet they would play out their runs where they are. I've mentioned it before, but I'm curious if the Nederlander will become a more popular house when Rent eventually closes and the theatre gets a much-needed face lift. It's 1,200+ seats with a single balcony. Not huge, but good for a mid-sized musical. And West 41st Street is a completely different place than when Rent first started running, so the fear that producers had of booking that theatre can no longer be substantiated.

I don't think it's anything we can change. I'm sure we'd all love for Broadway to be more like it was in the 40's-60's where there were new shows in Broadway houses every 300 performances or so. Nowadays, that could be considered a flop. It's just a matter of business. If a show CAN run for 15 years, then no producer in their right mind would close it just so that they can get another show in that theatre. Broadway is risky, and when you find something that works, you hold on to that for dear life. That's just the way it works now. Nothing we can do about it.

well i think theyd be required to make new sets for a new theater if they moved anyway... I havent seen Phantom in ages and Ive never seen Lion King so I dont know how theyd do in a smaller space. With Wicked, it sure wont move this year, its doing well and new. I think that theater is too big, first time I sat last row ochestra, I got a headache from eye strain.

Most shows can generally find a way to scale down if they need to though. Tours have to be able to up and move easily (and cost effectively). Hairspray cut like a whole truck from their touring production recently, didnt they?

I don't think any shows will undergo theatre moves - especially not in the next 5 years - I can't see it.

Not saying this would happen, but when Les Miz and Beauty moved to new theatres, they brought in the sets from the national tour. Say that Disney and Cameron Macintosh wanted the Majestic for Mary Poppins a year or two from now, and Phantom still had some life in it, they could bring in the sets from one of the Phantom tours and move to a different house.

I don't think All Shook Up will run forever, but I think they will have a comfortable run for the Palace. Maybe ALW and Cameron/Disney can arm wrestle for the Minskoff for Woman In White/Mary Poppins.

Broadway Theatre is booked with Mambo Kings this summer. I don't see that being a huge hit, but what do I know.

Mambo Kings is moving into the Broadway this summer. Lennon gets the Broadhurst after 700 Sundays. When The Woman in White was bound for Broadway this fall, they had announced the Minskoff, but they are now saying a Nederlander theatre to be named for Spring, '06. I'm sure some of the other shows for 05-06 have been penciled in for other theatres, but I think that might be all that is public for right now.

As I mentioned, Les Miz when it moved from the Broadway to the Imperial, and Beauty and the Beast when it moved from the Palace to the Lunt-Fontanne, both brought in sets from their respective national tours.

I understand Wicked and Lion King staying put due to huge sets, but I can completely see Hairspray moving to a theatre such as the Virginia or the Broadhurst and Mamma Mia moving to a theatre such as the Eugene O'Neil in a few years. The Mamma Mia set is not that big and Hairspray downsized their tour so I feel it could move too. I think its a nice idea to try shows at smaller houses rather than close them all together because they can't consistenly fill caves like the Minskoff or the Gershwin.
