Holiday Recommendations

Hi All,

I will be travelling to NY from Sydney in December/January. What are the "must see" shows (both plays and musicals) that will be playing on/off broadway at that time? I'm hoping that Anastasia will have opened by then but I'm not sure of the usual time frame between out of town tryouts and broadway. I'd love to see Hamilton but accept that my chances of getting tickets is reasonably slim. Can't wait to be back there, I last visited New York in 2011 (circa Book of Mormon post Tony's and How to Succeed with Daniel Radcliffe) and loved it!

Also, I'll be in NY for christmas and new year. Does anyone have any recommendations for things to do for christmas and new years in New York?

Personally, I'm looking forward to The Great Comet and Falsettos. Since neither are open yet, there are no reviews or anything, but I have high hopes. :)

Thanks for your response. I'm looking forward to seeing The Great Comet. I'll look at getting tickets in advance for that because I think the seating options look really interesting. Falsettos could be great too. I'd love to see Something Rotten, Waitress, Bright Star, The Color Purple but I'll have to check if they'll still be on by Dec/Jan.

Nice to see a fellow Australian! I definitely recommend Something Rotten! It's fantastic. I also recommend Fun Home, School of Rock, Waitress, American Pyscho etc. Hopefully they are all still on come December! I'm also hoping Anastasia is on Broadway at the end of the year. I'm visiting again in November and I'm dying to see it!

As for Christmas I recommend the Union Square Christmas markets, Rockefeller tree, ice skating at Central or Bryant Park, the decorations and Christmas Windows at Macy's and 5th avenue, Santaland on one of the top floors of Macy's. Also I know my parents did a tour of the best Christmas lights in Brooklyn - if I recall you go on a bus and get hot chocolate etc, I know they enjoyed it!

I saw the rest of your options except Something Rotten. That's coming through my city on tour, so I'm just waiting for it. Waitress was fun. I'm among those who didn't love Bright Star. The performers are great, and I LOVE the music, but the weak story and the repetitive lyrics weren't my cup of tea. The Color Purple is FANTASTIC. I loved it so much that a friend and I are taking our 14 year old daughters to see it in early June. Whatever you choose, I hope you have a wonderful time. :)

I'd forgotton about Fun Home, I'll definitely be seeing that. I saw American Psycho when it was on in London a few years ago with Matt Smith. I saw Sutton Foster in a concert she did in Sydney a few months ago and thought she was brilliant. I'll look up Sweet Charity too.

I'd wait before committing to buy tickets for the Great Comet. The on-stage seats are really $$$ and having seen the show two years ago when it was at the Kazino tent in midtown (literally a circus tent), I found the show amazing! Then again, the seats back then were $20-$50 and it really felt like you're part of the show. To get a glimpse of the show I saw, check out this video with Brittain Ashford, who played Sonya back then and who was also cast as Sonya for the Broadway production! She sings one of my favorite songs from the show. As for the Broadway production, I'd wait until you hear reviews on which seats are worth buying. My 2 cents.

I'd also add Matilda unless you've seen it on the West End already. I saw both productions and do prefer the West End one, though the Broadway one is pretty good as well.

I personally love NYC during the holidays --- from looking through the store windows at Saks, Bloomingdales, Macys, Lord & Taylor, etc. to walking by Rockefeller Center or venturing out to the different neighborhoods to see their christmas trees, it's quite festive.
