Yes, I remember that period all too well. And since I referred to bigots feeling emboldened to express overt slurs, the refusal to even mention AIDS obviously wasn't what I was talking about.
Yes, I've heard homophobic slurs from time to time in various cities on both coasts. And now that you mention it, Namo, I suppose the early years when AIDS was associated almost exclusively with being gay probably were equivalent. So I should have said "since the 1980s" rather than the 1970s.
But I think there's a resurgence of self-righteousness about such affronts in the past few years. Even more so are racists emboldened to display their ignorance. That's my impression, anyway.
