Posted: 11/23/07 at 7:41pmIt's a nice score, for sure. IMO, however, the show is too closely identified with Ethel Merman to avoid unfair comparisons. I know, Tyne Daly did it at Encores! some years back and was well received; however, that was Encores! and I question whether the show would run without a Merman. There's just too much documentation of Merman's performance, including her best movie performance. I love Mary Testa, but am not sure that she would carry that particular show. I'd certainly see her, however.

Posted: 11/23/07 at 7:51pmMary Testa is probably one of the best belters out there. She is currently singing "Evil Woman" 8 x a week in Xanadu. She can also be found belting her brains out on the See What I Wanna See recording, as well as 42nd St, Infinite Joy, and several other great discs. Her "Hard Hearted Hannah" on the Broadway Unplugged is reason enough to cast her!

Posted: 11/23/07 at 8:01pmOkay, so I watched this movie recently, since I've actually owned it for years and hadn't watched it yet, and I was not thrilled. It was alright. I love me some merm, but this show was not the best. The songs were quite boring IMO. She has done much better. I would love to have seen her in Hello, Dolly!

#8re: How About a Call Me Madam Revival?
Posted: 11/23/07 at 8:04pmI can't see her as Dolly. Victoria Clark is my only choice for that role. If Roundabout did it, I think Testa would be a great choice. A commercial run would need a big star. I'd go for Tyne Daly reprising her great work from Encores!
