I've only been once to Bway, and saw Little Shop twice, two days in a row actually and here in Mexico:
Beauty and the Beast - 2 times (ran only for a year)
Les Miz - 3
West Side Story - 3
The Woman in Black - 5
Chicago - 2
- Monica
Cats, 2 times Not by choice
Cabaret, 2 times
Beauty & the Beast, 2 times
Thoroughly Modern Millie, 2 times
Boy from Oz, 2 times
42nd Street, 3 times
Les Miz, 2 times
I wanted to see Cabaret and Les Miz again before they closed but never got a chance.
AIDA - 10+
"Some of you need to expand your horizons. Seeing one show repeatedly and nothing else (or little else) doesn't really make you theatrically literate and makes me reading some of your posts carry so little weight now... "
Just because I've only seen "A few shows and one several times" doesn't necesarily make me theatre illiterate.
I don't live close enough to either Broadway or the West End to see a show every week like I would LOVE to be able to do.
I also do have my favorites - I've been in love with Phantom for fifteen years and it was only two years ago I was finally able to see it live. If it's nearby, damn straight I'm gonna see it as MANY times as I can make it in the short time it's near me.
Like I said, Les Mis is the next decent tour coming my way, and I do plan on seeing it . . . if the first time the cast impresses me enough, I'll see it multiple times.
As far as I know, the next good show coming my way is Phantom again.
Now, if we had more GOOD shows come at times when I can afford to go (I missed Miss Saigon, JCS, Starlight Express, and 42nd Street tours due to being in the hospital and then on medical leave for a month while they were all a 20 minute drive away) I would. I've got cast recordings of many, many shows. Heck, if Wicked were coming, I'd be going to see that as I ADORE the cast recording. I could think of several other shows I would LOVE to see . . . it's just they are not within my grasp.
Sorry for the rant, but someone calling me and others theatre illiterate just because we've only "seen" a "few shows" rankles me. I've probably been into musical theater longer than *some* have been alive.

and I have a whole list of shows I've seen 2 or 3 times...very rarely do I just see a show once.
It's kind of silly to say people aren't theatre literate when all you're going on is a list of professional shows that they've seen more than once. I assume I don't only speak for myself when I say that there are a lot of musicals that I have seen once and thus didn't list, and many, many musicals that I have seen regionally, some more than once.
Ha ha... ok let's see try this one!
Mamma Mia Tour 2 "my" cast ( and I have the right to call them that!! ) 151 times!
Mamma Mia Tour 2 ( revised... new cast ) 1 time ( so far )
Mamma Mia Tour 1 .... 1 time and NEVER again.
I remember two years ago when Tour 2 first started and everyone was bashing it on the message boards. Well, let me tell you... they were by far a better cast than any of the other Mamma Mia companies out there!!! Each individual cast may have strong performers, but the original Tour 2 had the best chemistry and best performers overall. J9 and Gary, I'm sure you'll agree!!! :)

I’ve very rarely paid full price. The only times I have that I can remember are once for The Producers, two of my Lion King tickets (the other three were discounts during previews), Mamma Mia (never again – so not worth $100), both times I saw Wicked, and two of my Rent tickets (one for the off-Broadway production at NYTW that was $45 so I don’t know if that really counts and one for the first Broadway preview – the rest were $20 front seats).
My multiple viewings (not including anything outside NYC) are:
Rent 16
Les Miz 14
Miss Saigon 8
Lion King 5
Side Show 5
Noise / Funk 4
Parade 4
(Actually I thought Parade was a weak show, but at the time that it was playing, it was questionable as to whether there was going to be a CD made and so I kept going to hear the score.)
The Life 4
(I thought this show had so much potential and I kept going back during previews to see if they were making it any better – they did a little, but not enough)
Violet 4
A Class Act 3
Cabaret 3
Chicago 3
Forbidden Broadway 3
Forum 3
Full Monty 3
Steel Pier 3
Sunset Boulevard 3
Titanic 3
1776 2
Aida 2
Bat Boy 2 (plus once in workshop)
Beauty and the Beast 2
Boob Movie 2
Big 2
Capeman 2
Dirty Blond 2
H2$ 2
In-Betweens 2
Jekyl and Hyde 2
(actually I thought this show was awful. I saw it in previews and then went back to see if they had improved any of it. Unfortunately, they hadn’t.)
Master Class 2
Millie 2
Noises Off 2
Play On 2
Rocky Horror Show 2
Sex and Longing 2
Urinetown 2
Wicked 2
And then there are the ones that got away – the ones I would have loved to see again, but I saw them too late in their runs to have a second chance. The ones that immediately come to mind are:
Amour
Angels in America 1 and 2
Carousel
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Passion
Sweet Smell of Success
Take Me Out
Wild Party (Lippa)

You missed my point, nor was I directing the statement specifically to you. If you read my original comment back you might understand better where I am coming from. Especially based on some of the other responses to this thread.
When someone sees Hairspray or Mamma Mia 37+ times and little else - they might think they are really into theater, but I don't see it as that way. Would one REALLY be into "food" if they only had the same meal over and over? Would one really be into art if they looked at only the same painting over and over?

Well put, themusicisinside! Whether you understood what jack42 was saying or not, I'm glad you said what you did. I get so jealous and frustrated reading this and seeing people's show lists like joniray's. NOT FAIR!!! Even with touring shows, I'm two hours away from a city that they will come to. And, being that my parents don't exactly share my love of musical theatre, I have to pick and choose which shows they will pay for and take the time to take me to. AAAHHH!!! This summer, I think I can get ONE show out of them...I have to choose between JCS, LSOH, Miss Saigon, Dream Coat, and Big River.....woe to me! I can only see ONE!! and as far as seeing a show more than once, I hope you people consider yourselves very lucky. But i'm not trying to attack...I just had to get that off my chest.
On that note, I will take any suggestions as to which of those shows I should see.....I'm very interested in LSOH (dont have album) and Miss Saigon, but I'm absolutely in love with my JCS album!

Horrors, Urinetown, Rent, tick Tick Boom (tour and regional)- 2
I have seen a lot of other shows though and have plans for more new ones in the next couple months. With Cabaret, I'd see another show the same day about 80% of the time. I always budgeted my time and money well with that show. I almost never pay full price...if I do, the show better be damn good. I'm also letting up on repeat shows a lot more too, once again I better have a damn good reason for going back. I know I'll end up at Rent at least once more, possibly Avenue Q if my friend wants to go, Millie (for Susan), and almost definitely The Producers...I can't resist Roger coming back, as much as I want to. I'm also deathly afraid that Assassins will have this hold on me with the dual power of NPH and O'Hare onstage.

Eh, nothing's wrong with seeing a show multiple times...there is SO much you miss the first time you see something. Plus, I like seeing shows from different sections of the theatre.
I have to laugh at some of the Rent fans, though...Some of them have no clue that there are other shows out there. I know a girl who has seen Rent FIFTY times less than 2 years. FIFTY. She went to go see Urinetown for free and came back saying how horrible Tom Cavenaugh was.
Me: Well, Hunter's supposedly coming back soon, so that's good! :)
Her: Who's Hunter?
Me: Hunter Foster.
Her: Never heard of him.
Me: He was the original Bobby in Urinetown...you know, he's Sutton's brother.
Her: Who's Sutton?
I mean, she spends her whole life in the theatre district seeing the same show over and over and hasn't picked up any common Broadway knowledge?
This is in response to Rentaholic...First, congrats on being a chorus member. Rent is an amazing play and how incredible to be part of it...Second, Mamma Mia is a really fun play. The story is silly, but you walk out with such a smile. And if its any consolation, I never liked Abba either, but when you put the songs to a story with different characters singing the parts, the songs come alive. Now, I'm a true Abba fan (well, Mamma Mia fan).
Good luck with the chorus part.
