How Odd; I Seem To Have Converted.#1

I just got the Evita OBCR and the Sweeney Todd revival albums for Christmas... and I need to say, I have never been a huge fan of Patti LuPone's. I've always respected her as a performer, and I know she's got charisma like crazy, but I've never really found her voice pleasant to listen to. But up 'till now, I've only seen videos of her. I've noticed that she's pretty much my favourite part of both Evita and Sweeney, which was not what I was expecting at all.
It's weird, I finally get exactly why Patti LuPone is such a legend, but I still can't explain what it is about her.

Posted: 12/25/08 at 7:57pmI think that is such a key aspect of why performers become popular, they just have "it." And Miss LuPone definitely has "it!" PS: great choices I love those cast albums!

Posted: 12/25/08 at 8:44pmI'm not a LuPone fan, but when I listened to the cast recording of ANYTHING GOES I felt like I finally was listening to what everybody else had been telling me about. Her rendition of those numbers is brilliant. Her Evita is great indeed.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 11:06amThe Sweeney Todd revival was one of the best shows I have ever seen on Broadway. That cast recording is played to death on my ipod! I love it!

re: How Odd; I Seem To Have Converted.#5
Posted: 12/26/08 at 1:21pmI think you should check out her solo recordings, too. Matters of the Heart is a favorite of mine, personally.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 1:40pmWell, if people on the dark side get to wear debonair top hats and bow ties, then I certainly want to join.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 1:58pmAh, I've only been to New York once in my life, and chances are slim to none that I'll return in the next five years-- my parents aren't into theatre, and the only reason I went the first time was because a wealthy friend invited me to go with her family. I'm sure I'll end up with the cast recording at some point, though...

I agree with Givesmevoice that "Matters of the Heart" is a very fine solo disc. It's a well-conceived set, and it's nice to hear her doing something other than "Don't Cry for Me" and "Anything Goes."
I particularly admire "Where Loves Resides" and "My Son."

I love gushing about Matters of the Heart, so I'll add my two cents here. In addition to "Where Love Resides" and "My Son" (both fine songs), I love "Air That I Breathe" and "Unexpressed". and for the lulz, nothing beats "Shattered Illusions" and "I Never Do Anything Twice".
MotH is the one concert of hers I haven't seen. one day.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 5:51pmI thought she was good in the Sweeney Todd concert with George Hearn. That's it.

I'm a Patti fan, but I just don't think she sounds the best on the Evita recoring. Of course, its common knowledge that the score is a beast to sing and she suffered vocal troubles from singing it. It sounds like she already had vocal trouble before Evita to me.
However, I LOVE her Mrs. Lovett. She has the best interpretation of the role, in my opinion.

"I thought she was good in the Sweeney Todd concert with George Hearn. That's it."
The one recorded on CD or DVD? I thought she was very weak in both, even more so on DVD (or maybe that's just because I can actually see her). I strongly prefer her (very different) performance on the Revival recording, I'd even go so far to say it's very good.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 8:26pmPatti in Concert!Sweeney on DVD never fails to make me crack a huge smile. especially her "By the Sea". broad comedy at its best.

Posted: 12/26/08 at 9:11pmI actually like her better in concert as Mrs. Lovett as well, but I didn't like her until I'd heard the revival. I think it's funny, hearing her without watching her at the same time is somehow better. Maybe it's because when I'm watching her, I'm too busy staring at her upper lip to hear her voice!

I must recommend that you acquire Patti LuPone Live... an AMAZING cabaret.
I listen to it regularly.
Such a excellent and wide range of songs, and awesome arrangements and fantastic interpretations.

Buy the SUNSET BOULEVARD World Premiere Recording.
She is MAGNIFICENT. That score was written for her voice, and she sings and acts the HECK out of it!
