first off, it needs to stop being a hairspray wannabe
and a huge difference between the two shows is that i don't think someone needs to have lived during the 60s to fully appreciate hairspray and get the jokes.
whereas i can say for me since i experience a teeeeeny bit of the 80s, that a lot of the 80s jokes of the wedding singer went right past me except for "who's gonna pay $4 for a cup of coffee" and all the technology references....
and yeah make laura benati's part more interesting
Why is this thread here? It was started back in February just when the show was closing in Seattle, and now the show has been open since late April. They're not going to make any changes. The only possibility would be when Laura Benanti leaves, they could fill it with someone that's a little different type (or maybe just promote Tina Maddigan).
The Wedding Singer is an absolute delight and wonderful just the way it is.

It's not bad the way it is, but like BobbyBubby said, it could be so much more. I actually agree with everything you've said Bobby. Laura is great, but this music doesn't really suit her voice very well. After listening to the new song "Someday" - I just don't feel like she fits in with the rest of the cast. I also agree that the book is pretty bland. I remember laughing a lot, but I don't remember any kind of character development. I think the plot is too simplistic - even for a musical comedy. The lyrics are pretty bad in some points. The one that sticks out is in "POP" When Amy Spanger says something like "Cosmo's latest quiz ..... gets down on that knee of his" - the rhyme is so forced and it doesn't flow very well with the music.
