Threadjack, but does anybody think that 50 First Dates would make a good musical? It's my favorite movie of either Adam Sandler or Drew Barrymore, and I think music could really elevate the concept.
I need to see the movie Groundhog's Day again because they are apparently similiar movies.
Here's a quote to get back on topic from the review of 50 First Dates in the NYTimes:
Along with Emily Watson, the love interest in 'Punch-Drunk Love,' Ms. Barrymore (who also appeared with Mr. Sandler in 'The Wedding Singer') is this actor's best romantic counterpart. Rather than dwell on Lucy's helplessness, she emphasizes the character's pluck and intelligence, and, most crucially, she does not let Mr. Sandler monopolize the jokes.
This is probably Barrymore's biggest strength, she's as big a clown as Sandler is. One doesn't immediately think comedienne when they think of Laura, I guess.

My aunt had tickets for the first Wed. matinee performance and got a call today that it's been cancelled. I hope that this isn't a sign of what's to come.

!!! Please tell me it's not true!
The first few previews are often cancelled on Broadway. THis is not an uncommon thing, especially for troubled or tech heavy shows.
The audience I was with really seemed to be into it. Although I was the only one in my section to get the Taboo joke, but that makes sense too. I think the piece as much as I enjoyed it does need work and can improve. Stephen Lynch is hilarious just in his own stuff and he could be a hell of a lot funnier if he were allowed to cut loose a little more.
Seriously though is there one person who like "My Eight Men"? Could live without that one. I think the score is really good and I really enjoy it, but I actually agree with you Bobby that the lyrics could do with changing, etc. Wow we agree on something.
Of course the audience loved it. The Seattle audiences that attend 5th Avenue production are very similar to New York tourist crowds. They love cheap stupid humor.
Bobby budy is my favorite person here in the Broadway.com

BobbyBubby's cool. Just don't go out to eat with him.
You know what really gets me Kringas? People talking with their mouths full of food. At work, if someone does that while I'm on the phone with them, I hang up.

You know what I can't stand? When my hands touch together while wet. It gives me the same feeling as nails on a chalkboard.
I hate that too. I really hate the sound of nails being clipped.

I hate when people say insurance, as opposed to insurance.

In that case, why bother fixing the book at all?
I hate when people say they are standing on line, instead of in line.

I hate when a person says "whenever" but means "when" or think that's "myself" is interchangeable with "me."
That's my point Pop. The team doesn't seem to care about being clever or original about their humor. Thing is, I don't think this show can survive with mixed to poor reviews, which it is sure to get if they deliver a similar product as in Seattle.
This is one of the shows my wife and I are thinking about seeing when we are in NYC, so I hope they get the kinks worked out soon. We both love Stephen Lynch and I would really like to see him used to his full potential in a show like this.
Honestly, from the video, I really dont think this show can be fixed. Almost everything seems flawed. The sets look cheap and uninspired. The lighting looks sub par. The jokes seem dumb and the songs sound horrible. Several of the scenes just look flat out stupid such as the rediculous dumpster bit (why the hell would anyone find that funny?) and the whole "Single" number. Even if the video doesnt do the show justice I cant imagine it can be that much better than what I have seen and given the limited time they have until it comes to Broadway, I cant see this as anymore than a luke warm forgetable show that could easily close within a year, especially given the intense competiton of fantastic shows that are on Broadway right now.
I hate it when people generalize about Seattle audiences and how they accept crap shows. Most people do, but a lot of people I know (including myself) don't.
This sucks... I was hoping it'd be a good show
But all these reviews make it seem bad.
I am gonna see this regardless cuz Stephen Lynch is the man and is so funny, but hopefully it can be changed. I really like dthe movie and I don't wanna have stupid cheap humor and 80s jokes thrown at me left and right, while the plot goes out the window. Eh, whatever, we'll see when it comes to NY.
If you haven't seen it yet jaykid, please see it for yourself. People miss alot of good shows because they just listen to other people.
I saw it today Wednesday May 10 and I thought it was just fun. As I said in the Grease thread, why does everything have to be thought-provoking and "smart?" Why can't shows just be fun anymore? You want a "smart" show, see one, but sometimes I just want to see a fun show. And please don't always put down tourists as stupid, willing to accept bad shows. Because without tourists we probably wouldn't have a Broadway as we know it.
this show is brilliant, i wouldn't change a thing.
The show would be vastly improved if Stephen Lynch performed the entire thing in his boxers. I haven't even seen the show, but I know this to be true.
