Posted: 12/23/06 at 8:42amIf I were to sum up Charles Isherwood's taste, I would say it was intellectual with a willingness to have fun. He can appreciate the larger intellectual arguments and effects proffered by shows which I think the layman would find completely boring (I thought Heartbreak House was a good production with good actors, but it was snooze central for me personally). That might not make him as accessible as other critics, but I admire his openmindedness. I think he and John Simon for me get my "respect" more than any other critics simply because of their knowledge of theatre history and how we fit into it. I of course am overjoyed that Spring Awakening was only one of three to make both he and Brantley's lists.
