How about Alice in Wonderland as Disney's next project?

Posted: 6/23/07 at 10:23pmI think that would make a fabulous musical. I would actually want to see that onstage.

Posted: 6/23/07 at 11:00pmHow about if Disney does something original instead of rehashing movies they have already done. Two successful cartoon transfers was lucky, the third failed by Disney standards, and more cartoons to stage may not be in their best interest. If Disney really wants to continue their efforst on the great white way, they really need to come up with some great new shows, otherwise their theatre ventures will end up like their animation studios, which has been turning out one crappy sequel after another rather than doing something new and innovative. If I want to see Alice in Wonderland, I'll rent the movie, it's a classic.

It will not happen because of The Essential Alice show which is still being worked on an is expected to debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in the next few season. For those of you who do not know what it is, it is Annie Weisman’s musical adaptation The Essential Alice, based on Lewis Carroll’s classic novels, with music by Michael Friedman (Paris Commune). The Essential Alice will be directed by Des McAnuff. It was supposed to play the Playhouse in 2005 but it it was delayed because it was not ready to be produced.

I love Alice in Wonderland, butI'd rather Mulan done on stage rather than any other disney movie.
If done right The Nightmare Before Christmas would be interesting. Probably would cost tons to make, though.
What about High School Musical!? Not.

WHile one of DIsney's biggest cult films it was also one of their biggest initial critical and box office disappointments--and they've never put it in their top league.
I dunno, I knwo there have been successful stage versions of Wonderland but I think the meandering story, casting issues (so many minor characters, few major ones) etc make it simply work much better as a book than as a musical.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 8:06amI doubt it would have very much success -- not popular enough among children.

My high school did a play version my senior year for the annual children's show.
All the elementary schools were invited to attend the 3 or 4 day afternoon performances and there wasn't an empty seat. It really was an incredible show. I wish I had pics. The evening performances were also packed (No doubt because the kids wanted to see it again, this time with their parents).
Our caterpillar looked like a huge green penis, head and all.

"And POPPINS with fairly positive reviews and a slew of TONY nominations, still can't seem to sell out."
Have you seen the grosses? The show is doing extremely well. Maybe not selling out, but pretty close to.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 12:18pmIf Disney does anything, they should do The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Whether or not it is the same as the production they did in Berlin does not matter to me as long as this movie sees the public eye again. Also, either George Hearn or Philip Quast should play Frollo.

There have been several Alice musical attempts, most of which have folded on the road to Broadway. The most notable being the Disco Version called "Alice" with Debbie Allen as Alice, Cleavant Derricks as the Caterpillar, and Alice Ghostley as the White Queen, that shuttered in 1978 on the road.
Honestly, if you can find a way to work it, it could be amazing, but as someone pointed out, it's a meandering story, with lots of characters, and doesn't lend itself to musicals well.
There is one play version though, that I wanna say was set in a mental institute...and it's a group of 6-7 actors, and one plays Alice, the others trade out roles, and as she leaves Wonderland, they do the entire Rabbit Hole sequence backwards. Now THAT was impressive.

In my opinion what should happen with Alice is that Tim Burton should make a film version of it... I think that would be interesting... Either live action or stop-motion.
And, albeit slightly off topic, I think "Nightmare Before Christmas" should be the next Disney project.

"Would you prefer to step over the heroine needles and ignore the prostitutes and smells coming from the porn stores? "
Oh my gosh. As much as I dislike Disney they have done alot for broadway and that sentence made me laugh out loud. Classic yet true!

Though it's been in development hell, there is a very dark film version based loosely on the property floating around.

Isn't the film based on American McGee's Alive, the very dark creepy computer game that I was very keen to play when it first came out but I still haven't got round to playing even though I own it? ^_^ (Didn't they cast Sarah Michelle Gellar? o_O)
When I read the book a few months ago, I was struck less by how dark it is and more by how witty and intelligent it is. That kinda thing just flies over your head when you're a kid, but makes these things WELL worth revisiting as an adult.

Yep that was the plan--I think now Marilyn Manson is involved...
The thing is--I ADORE the book and like the Disney film despite it flaws (hell I even insist on riding the DIsneyland dark ride in the caterpillars everytime) and I think there is a lot of dark and creepiness to Alice. But... That's been focused on so much--I think a different angle that doesn't overemphasize the dark and creepy aspects, the "druggie" things, etc, would at this point maybe be more interesting
