I'm sure Julie Taymor could make it work too. They'd have to do a mostly new score, but I think Broadway is overdue for a staging of this classic tale.
I agree 100%!
I don't know if they could generate enough interest.
It's a fabulous story but it seems the only Disney shows that sell well are the blockbuster movies. IE: BEAUTY, LION KING and, if it gets good reviews, LITTLE MERMAID will be sold out until kingdom come.
TARZAN, even before the reviews wasn't impossible to get tickets to. And POPPINS with fairly positive reviews and a slew of TONY nominations, still can't seem to sell out.
I think with the right artists involved, they could get positive reviews ala Lion King.
Wow that would be brilliant!
They would need out and out raves.
But, if it can be achieved, I don't see why not.
I know they'll never do it because all of the PC crap, but I'd love to see them tackle POCAHONTAS.
Disney's Pocahontas has some wonderful songs, but is probably the most offensive (next to the priest sex scene in Hunchback) animated film I have ever seen. It is insulting to native Americans, and I'm surprised it wasn't protested that much.
John Smith raped her, took her to the white man's land, and she died. Pure and simple. Nothing to sing about, in my opinion.
GOOD NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWS!
SHE'S DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAD!
Oh, wait. That's another Schwartz show.
My mistake.
Can Disney just take a break? PLEASE?

I'd love to see them make Alice in Wonderland on Broadway!

We owe a lot to Disney. I always here the negative remarks, but it has brought millions of people to Broadway and cleaned up Times Square. Would you prefer to step over the heroine needles and ignore the prostitutes and smells coming from the porn stores?

I miss the porn stores. At least they had more variety than Disney films being made into $120 ticket musicals. And, there was no Red Lobster or Olive Garden or Applebees or any of the other same old same old that you can find anyplace other than NYC.
Once Disney can produce quality material - they will get more respect.
Alice in Wonderland is just about the most trippy animated movie I've ever seen, and if they could recreate that effect on stage, I would go see it in a heartbeat. All I can think of when I see it is an acid trip.

Maybe with Fantasia as Alice?
What a brilliant choice!

Hahah, I find that creepy since I was seriously about to post a thread on whether or not if there was a Caroline, or Change revival in the future if Fantasia could play Caroline or Emmie.
I don't know about Alice in Wonderland. It is a great show and it would have to be conceptualized for it to work properly but I want to see Hercules or Mulan. Of course w/ both of those shows you would have to deal with the issues of Pegasus and Muushuu (sp?) respectively. I think we should see how Little Mermaid does first.
Cheers,

I would LOVE for them to do this. But ONLY if they took a dark approach on it. Base it more off the book and actually TRY to scare you. I would pay good money for that.
I'd love to see Alice in Wonderland onstage, but I'd prefer it if weren't Disney tackling it.

I want it to be like....Pan's Labyrinth dark. That would be amazing.
I think, instead of a recent blockbuster, they should indeed to a stage version of a classic film, but Alice isn't it. The show that would be the most dazzling onstage is Sleeping Beauty. Think of the marvelous effects: Maleficent (along with Cruella, my favorite Disney villain) turning into a dragon, the marvelous good fairies, the lovely scene of Aurora dancing with the animals in the woods, and of course, the thorns surrounding the castle. It could be a truly spectacular stage musical!
Sorry to dissapoint all you guys, but Frank Wildhorn (who I know is so popular with many people on this site) has already written an Alice in Wonderland musical... It's currently workshopping. Here's a link...

PS - I think perhaps Disney should start producing more original works outside of the Disney movie catalogue... (A la Aida) maybe they'd gain a little more respect through that...
