Come on, people, colorblind casting!
If this Asian boy could be (and WAS) cast as Emile deBecque in "South Pacific," anything is possible!
But I'm not sure if Jennifer Hudson is right for Elphaba. I don't know if she fits. I'd have to think about it for a while to see if I like the idea or not...
And about the being on American Idol bit, I'll let it slide. I'll just think of it as a blind mistake. I'm willing to forgive, haha.

If Jen pays her dues, which it looks like she is doing, I have no problem with her. She's becoming part of the Broadway family, with the Hair concert and whatnot. I believe that she will be in a broadway show someday soon. I don't necessarily dump her in with Tamyra, Fatone, LaChey, Melanie and the rest. She could actually be amazing. She needs to prove it though. Tamyra is embarrasing herself at the Broadway Theatre.

i haven't gotten over to see Tamyra, but I haven't heard great news about her :/! oh well

Yeah--Jennifer was absolutely stunning at Hair. We have no idea how she acts. I don't think she would fit the role for different reasons. Yes, Elphaba is supposed to be pop-sounding, but I think Jennifer may be too soulful for the role. Call me crazy, but it makes sense in my crazy mixed up head.
That's what I wanted to say. I just didn't know how to say it.
Yeah, well said Ebonic.

For the record -- I saw Tamyra in Bombay Dreams last week, and though she was far from brilliant, I think she held her own. Strangely enough, I felt like she was a better actress than she was a singer -- she is GORGEOUS and she has a good deal of presence - she is able to command the stage when she has to. Her voice was kind of iffy and she definitely isn't an INCREDIBLE BROADWAY STAR -- but I think she held her own.
I am the most anti-pop-stars-on-broadway person in the world, and really think Tamyra did an OK job. She has poise and grace coming out of every part of her body.
Well, I disgree about some of your Tamyra review, but I was SO used to the original cast that I need Anisha to be erased from my mind before I can enjoy Tamyra. She's definitely growing, but she's lacking the necessary comic timing, and her accent is still an abomination.
As far as this THREAD, come on guys...can we please not have 2 new threads every day about who's going to play Elphaba?

How can you questions someones acting skills that you have not seen. And as far as her being from american idol and thinking she is a broadway star. It was them who called her to do the shows she has done. She did not walk up in there and say hey I am from idol and i think I can do this. Updated On: 11/28/04 at 02:27 AM
Ron, was that to me?

No that was to jwei12 who said her acting would question some. I have not sen her act so I know he hasn't. How would you know?

I think it is fair to question her acting ability simply because she has never done any. That was my initial point. Even if she can sing the role it may be to big of an acting challenge for a complete novice.
I don't know if she's got the right type of voice for Elphaba. I mean, she is very good, bu tI don't know if it would be the right part for her. However, I wouldn't mind seeing it and finding out. :)

She is from the southside she can hold her own. Sounds like a few of you tried out for the role and did'nt make the cut. Who the hell cares if she plays the role. Updated On: 11/28/04 at 03:07 AM
When I first saw Jennifer Hudson i though that she would be a good candidate for broadway. Personally I would like to see her put on her training wheels in something like the Lion King, but I would love to see her on Broadway. I think she could be big, if her acting is up to scratch.
and i also dont like celebrities going on Broadway because they are celebrities

I don't think she is a celebrity though. Someone like Matthew Broderick or hugh jackman. Those are celebrities. Toni Braxton.

If Jennifer Hudson plays anything, she will make it work. She really can do anything. Well, except for be bad.
I'm a blind fan, so I think she'd be great in everything. She should have taken over for Hugh Jackman.

Lack of acting experience does not necessarily mean that someone wouldn't be good in a Broadway show. Not everyone who comes to Broadway has a ton of acting experience. One of the best Broadway performers I've ever seen (and I've seen pretty much every Broadway show for the past ten years) had never had any acting experience before he was cast in a show. He was a musician. He's an amazing actor and he's not the only example of this happening. I think it's wrong to automatically discount any performer just because they haven't been on Broadway before. Broadway has taken advantage of actors from film and tv and the music world for decades. It's nothing new.

Just because she is a great singer doesnt mean she deserves it. I agree with Dulcinea about the boy band thing. And i agree that the role shouldnt go to someone who everyone knows has a good voice, but to someone who may be undiscovered but is way better than the already famous people. And just because you can sing doesnt automatically mean you can act, and visa versa.

Wow, I'm surprised that people are so against bringing in people with talent, just because they "aren't Broadway". If someone from "American Idol" is talented, what does it matter? Since when is Broadway like the exclusive clique in high school? Only "certain people" can get in? I think if you have talent and if the casting folks feel you are right for the part, then congratulations! Now, if the person cast is lacking in talent, then I suppose I can understand. But to make a blanket statement like that is a little closed-minded.

Give me a break. She would have come to broadway if she was on the show or not. People act like she is this huge rich star who is getting more of an advantage. All she has done is 2 benefit shows. And it is not her fault if people are ringing her phone to have her in their shows. She has not even hit the stage yet. She is still undiscovered. We need young blood on the stage anyway.

To whoever asked about Idina being Jewish...
Idina changed her name from Adena, a Jewish name, and Menzel (which was probably originally Mentzel)isn't far off either. She started out as a Bar-Mitzva singer, and my aunt read an article about how her parents are Israeli.
I'd bet on it.
P.S. I just found a thread from a while back...yup.
I think we should just all wait to see who they announce!!
Oh and i do think that Jennifer would be AMAZING as Elphaba. I agree with some of you about how everyone's allowed to be on broadway if they have the talent. Well, when do they actually announce who's Elphaba? January 10?

People act like she is taking over broadway. She has not even done a show yet. Who has she put out of work? No one. She still lives in her humble southside neighborhood. She is just as undiscovered and deserving as any other person.
