THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG?
Hasn't been done in over twenty years. Nominated for several Tonys.
Just saw the Tony Awards performance of the show, with Lucie Arnaz. I really enjoyed it. Ran for over 1,000 performances - I take it it was well received?

Posted: 6/3/05 at 5:48amIt has become a popular show a dinner theatres. That's pretty much where SONG belongs.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Popular in dinner theatres for two reasons:
1: Producers think the names Marvin Hamlsich and Neil Simon will sell tickets.
2: IT'S CHEAP, CHEAP CHEAP! - Cast of eight. modern costumes, simple sets (except for the sports car).
Personally, I find it terribly dated. The music screams out "1970's disco" and would only work if done as a period piece.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 9:32amIf you thought it was cheap it must have the production you saw. A major highlight of the show was Doug Schmidt's set, with revolve, sliding panels and projections. I really wouldn't want to see the show without it. There are a few references which would need to be changed to bring it upto date, but other than that it would be ripe for revival.

Unfunny with a fun pop score.
Neil Simon's worst book musical to date. Dull.
And I saw the original.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 12:10pmI think with the right leads it could be funny. The show was a huge international hit when it first came out, and there was even talk of a movie at one point. Probably not a show worthy of a full Broadway revival, but might be fun for something like Encores or Musicals in Mufti.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 1:14pmNobody's done Shenandoah for a long time and it had a decent run. If not on Broadway, then regionally. It made its mark in the early 70's, when the country was still divided over the VietNam war. Similiar circumstances now over Iraq. Might be the time to dust it off. Its score is fairly traditional, but is a good vehicle for a strong baritone lead. (I'd personally love to hear Daniel Davis sing something like this.)

Posted: 6/3/05 at 3:02pmYou could be right, doodlenyc, but 1989 was 16 years ago, and the country's emotional climate has changed a lot since then. You're right about the score! It's gorgeous.

Given how much I love The Light In The Piazza, I'd really like to see the same creative team revive DO I HEAR A WALTZ? Victoria Clark would be great in the lead, and imagine what Venice would look like with the same set, costume and light designers. And Adam Guettel's grandad wrote a lucious score, with melodies no less! Don't forget Sondheim's lyrics too.
Let it happen. Take the moment!

Posted: 6/3/05 at 8:38pmI do wish someone could make the book for Mack and Mabel work. The score, as I'm sure everyone on here knows, is one of the best.
