Your profile says you are a journalist. Obviously the standards of traditional journalism do not apply here, but if you want to make an accusation, you ought to be prepared to back it up. Your initial post said clearly that Nathan Lane's involvement in Addams Family has lead you to anticipate that the opening might be postponed. When challenged you offered completely unrelated examples of him missing shows due to injury and deciding he did not want to be in a film. When challenged again, you offered this underhanded crack:

He has had a very distinguished theatrical career, and I give him his props.

(I believe he also missed some performances of The Odd Couple as well... laryngitis?? Don't recall... and it doesn't really matter does it??)

If it doesn't really matter, why say it? Let me play journalism teacher a moment and show you how one would REALLY "Make a case" in an expose.

"I think Walnut started this thread to stir up some Poop about Nathan Lane. She claimed to be afraid to buy opening night tickets to the Addams Family because Nathan Lane's involvement in the show made her worry that the opening would be postponed. But, of course, Nathan Lane has never been responsible for a show not opening on time. She then tried to back up her accusation by saying that Lane "sometimes has problems," citing some injuries and never missing a chance to take a swipe at the stage star. On top of this, no opening night for this show has been scheduled, no tickets have gone on sale and indeed, no theater has been chosen- making it rather fishy that Walnut is already worried that the date would be changed due to Lane's shenanigans. Walnut obviously has a vendetta against Lane or this show and is still conducting an unfounded whisper campaign as I type."

See not so hard. State your thesis, offer corroborating evidence, then re-state your thesis. As my journalism teacher would say: "Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em, then tell 'em, then tell 'em what you told 'em."

Cut off your hand and offer it as a stage-prop. I'm sure that'd warrant a comp.

Actually, the producers have announced an opening night for both previews and the actual opening, though no theater has been announced. Shows often announce their opening night well in advance to reserve the night so that there is no conflict with other shows opening around that time.

As for the poster who said they would leave the board because someone was rude to them...first, I would say that there are many people on these boards and one person is not a reason to leave. If you are interested in the topics, feel free to stay. I would recommend however that you not surmise or guess at things if you do not want to be slammed by others on the boards. The assumption that an actor is undependable should be backed up by facts. You mentioned the Odd Couple so you obviously know a number of shows that Lane has done. However, his record for that show was fine. If you expect an actor never to get sick or to miss a performance, you will be disappointed. Consider a 25-30 year history of stage work and look at the number of missed performances.

Your original point was whether the opening night would change. It may but it would not be because of an actor. It would be a date the producers chose to change for any number of other issues. April 2010 is a long way off. As I said before, you have plenty of time to get tickets. Wait for the announcement and watch the boards and Telecharge, Playbill, TheaterMania, etc for ticket announcements.

There are so many ways it could change ... I'd go with waiting until a week-ish before. Some instances of what could potentially happen:

-Woman in White kept it's original Opening Night despite star Maria Friedman receiving bad health news (and treatment) - she opened that night however (but missed a slew of previews).

-Jane Eyre ~ The Musical somehow got pushed back a week after changes were made (that was in the works for 7+years and already had 3 full productions); a lot of the Eyre-Heads did get to go to the opening, considering it was pushed back a week to the day.

-Jekyll & HYDE - Linda Eder somehow got lanyrgitis during the middle of previews. Worse: Emily Skinner (and Leah Hocking) apparently couldn't fit in her costumes and their's weren't done yet. Emily Skinner sang backstage for Linda onstage...and her voice/the Opening Night were saved.

-A Tale of Two Cities scheduled a Chicago opening in January of 2006, and a move to Broadway in April 2006. Never happened and the whole run was canceled!

I believe it was that the understudies were not fully rehearsed on fight scenes and choreography...

There are always people lurking outside the theater on opening nights asking if someone has extra ticket. You could try that.

I can hear it now...

"Do you happen to have an extra ticket? Really? That's great! Do you happen to have four? I'd hate to leave my kids and spouse out here on the sidewalk..."
