I'm doing a research paper on just that. How critics and reviews affect a Broadway show- negatively or positively. What I'd like from all of you is your opinion. I haven't completely decided on how I'm going to organize this paper. So far it's looking like I will choose shows that fit into three categories: Rave, Mixed, and Negative. I will probably follow each show through grosses but also take into account their running cost and other important factors. If you see a more organized or better way feel free to offer your idea. Also, if you have anything to say as far as your opinion about how reviews dictate a show's success, if you could please leave your first name, I will be using actual quotes from opinions for the actual paper. (This will be used as a substitute for a live interview.) Thank you so much.

Follow the grosses. It's easiest.

For Broadway plays, reviews make or break a show generally
Musicals are trickier.
For musicals, it's usually that good reviews can really help, but aren;t essential.
Wicked and Mamma Mia! both recieved mixed reviews but look at them.
Sweet Smell of Success got mixed-negative and closed after 4 months and one Tony win, but had a huge star.
and
42nd Street Revival got mixed revies, won 2 major Tonys, was open for almost 4 years, but didn't recoup.
Of couse there is a difference beteen Mamma Mia! and Wicked and Sweet Smell of Success, but musicals are really tricky, it's a mixed bag really.
It is a fascinating subject, and I would definitely be interested on seeing your final paper.
