It seems like such a chore, the tubes are often too small for a cardboard poster, is the only way is to carry them in my hand? Updated On: 9/9/08 at 04:55 PM
Pay the carry on fee?
Take them to a pack and ship place and ship them home.
Sit on them?
Yes, I buy window cards regularly on my trips to NY. I carry them to the airport and through security in the bag I received from the store. Get a window seat. The poster bags slide perfectly in between the wall of the plane and your seat. It's out of the way and stays in perfect condition.

Order your posters online instead. The shipping fees are more than worth the hassle of trying to transport the posters home yourself without damaging them. I have ordered many posters from both Triton Gallery and PlaybillStore.com, and with one execption, they have arrived in mint condition. And that one order that went wrong was quickly corrected with one email. The order was reshipped at no additional cost to me.
I don't get why some people are so resistant to ordering posters online and paying a shipping fee, IF it is backed up by excellent customer service. If you carry the posters home yourself and they get damaged, you are SCREWED. When you order online from a reputable dealer, it is not just more convenient. You also have recourse if the posters are damaged in shipment.
Some people like to live dangerously, I suppose.
Put them between two pieces of cardboard, then put them in a plastic bag. Carry them on the plane (the airport really doesn't care if that plastic bag is technically your "third bag"- I've done this three to four times and have never been hassled.) Put the posters under whatever carry-on bag you brought in the overhead compartment. It has worked for me every time.
And if you need cardboard- go to the souvenir shop in the Marriott Marquis. They sell it that is built to the actual size of the poster.
Order on line! I get mine sent to the UK and if there is the slightest dent or scratch it gets replaced- no questions!
Its normally cheaper too!
I have 2 super thick pieces of foam core cut to fit in the bottom of my largest suitcase. I sandwich the window cards between the foam core pieces and tape them together. I take them every time I go to NYC. They have survived checked baggage for over 20 round trip flights. All of my posters have made it safely home to Atlanta.
You gotta roll them into a poster tube and carry it on. That's how I did it. It's not that much of a pain.

Foam core works very well. Or you can just make sure you don't pack anything lumpy, and put it right at the bottom of your suitcase.

Long time lurker, but I just registered to answer this question.
I shipped a dozen signed posters around the country and found the best way to ship them without getting any bent was to fit it in a priority mail shoe box. I know this sounds weird, but it does not require tight curl and the poster pops out just fine and it does not get crushed.
Priority mail boxes are free from the post office or USPS.com and can fold flat for one way, but they are also very strong and kept the posters from being crushed once packed inside.
I hope this helps.

well obviously i said 'autographed' so that takes ordering them out of the question
I've always carried them on the plane with me. I had five with me the last time and I had them all in one bag that they give you when you buy them. Even though I have a carry on bag, they didn't top me having my bag of window cards, didn't charge me either. I flew Midwest. I would slide them under my seat or between my seat and the window wall.
I've always put them at the bottom of my suitcase and they always get home fine. The last time I carried them with me, the corners got a little bent, and were probably only noticable to me.
